Piledriver Release Date?

post #1 of 141
Thread Starter
Anyone know when they plan on releasing the next gen of AMD CPUs? I've been waiting to upgrade my Phenon II x4 955 BE for awhile now since everything else AMD has would not really be much of an increase in performance.

Also is there any info on wether or not Piledriver would use AM3+ or a new socket type? I just upgraded my board a couple months ago thinking it would last a couple years and certainly hope AMD sticks with the AM3/AM3+ fitting.

its reads on wiki, Piledriver will have increased power efficiency and less heat output.thumb.gif
and its going to be on an am3+ socket.

Life is full of decisions... biggrin.gif Vishera (Piledriver cores) - has been scheduled for Q3/4 release for at least 6 months and I expect that's when it will START to become available.

I personally expect about a ~15% performance gain over the FX CPUs which most people will find a decent performance bump especially considering Ivy Bridge is only a ~5% bump over Sandy Bridge. I also expect higher clockspeeds to be available with Vishera so those who want highend discrete CPU performance may like Vishera a lot, especially if it OC's like the FX CPUs.

Only you can decide what is right for you. PC tech marches on because that is the only means companies have to create new sales. Any CPU that you buy now is certainly likely to be useful for 3-5 years unless you insist on paying for the trick-of-the-week hardware.

I say it will be more than that... seen how an old stars core´s IPC was superior to BD and now Piledriver is superiror to that a better 32nm stars core, I would say 20% about right

That is why we need to wait and see... wink.gif It's better to under-promise and over-deliver than vice versa.

That is near Trinity's date.
http://semiaccurate.com/2012/06/01/amd-delays-desktop-trinity-one-quarter/

The platforms that supposedly sucked or failed last year are getting priority. Basically, this is a huge apology to OEMs/etc. and to show AMD can deliver on time for products.

They were:
Fusion Mobile
FX Desktop

(Bulldozer was suppose to launch Q2/Llano Mobile was suppose to launch in June but was delayed till August If I remember/Llano Desktop was originally going to come after Bulldozer but launched before it).
((Trinity Mobile(Q1-Q2)->Piledriver(Q2)->Trinity Desktop(Q3)->X90FX/SBX50(Q4)))
