My buddy has a an Dual processor i7 2.8 quad core Mac Pro Tower. He does pro audio and is currently using 2 firewire 800 ports running all the time. He is using all of the usb ports now (4back 2front) connected to about 6 external drives.

The general function of the computer is ok, I bench tested it and it seems to score fine but since he added the last 2 external drives there is a great delay in the computer recognizing all of the drives, or if you put a flash drive in it takes a solid minute or two for the OS to recognize it.

I'm assuming there is a usb bottle neck but was wondering if this is an internal bus overload (like just too much data being pushed since the firewire 800 pumping all the time), or would buying and additional PCI usb expander help the situation?
