Need help deciding what to do

Thread Starter
I recently built myself a new system, and was under the assumption that if I used digital output, then I wouldn't need a sound card. Unfortunately I'm using 5.1 surround speakers, and so apparently it needs DTS/DD encoding, otherwise It'll only be stereo.

My main focus is for gaming of all kinds, but I also watch a lot of movies and tv shows.

My current setup:
Realtek ALC892 onboard
Logitech Z-5450 5.1 speakers

So I guess the main options I'm looking at are:

1. Switch to analog with the onboard audio

2. Pick up a sound card that can do digital encoding. In this case, what would be the difference between an expensive card and a cheap one besides software fluff?

3. Get a good sound card and use the analog outputs. I'm not too educated on digital vs audio for PC sound, but if I had to guess it would depend on whether the sound card or the receiver were better.

Any recommendations?

Not sure about which route to take, however, my brother has the x-fi creative with the front panel. The asus Xonar also comes with a Front panel iirc.

A bit pricey though frown.gif
