[Various] AMD Trinity APU Review Roundup - Page 32

Why are some people complaining about A85X prices for budget builds?

Is your sub $400 budget computer going to comprise of CFX? 7 or 8 SATA devices?

Another thing we have to add to Trinity is a decent cooler like the 212, so add another $30 to that, and you're nearing $280.

$150 Trinity is doable if Microcenter has a sale next quarter $50 off a $80 A75 mobo , $100-120 for the APU itself... They had Phenom II X6s and FX series with motherboards for basically free. Since they do a flat discount, the less the upfront cost of the motherboard, the better a deal it is.

Right now it's $80-90ish for the A75 motherboard, which is VERY affordable. That's about half the price of a decent Z68/Z77.

I believe the only FM2 board that has more than 4+2 power phase is the Gigabyte A85X ( 8+2 phase digi VRM design), so I guess that's the incentive.

I'm in Canada, and don't live near a Microcenter unfortunately, stuck with NewEgg.ca, NCIX...

I'd like to know the same thing. Some people's expectations are simply unreal.

IIRC the (more expensive) ASUS model has a 6+2 phase VRM.

Who needs more than 4+1 phase VRM for trinity?

I don't think the FM2 socket will ever see an APU consuming more than 200 watts.

i think some of the board are too expensive at the moment but they should get cheaper as the sales inevitably slump and they become HTPC niche.

what really needs to happen is for whatever gpu amd has out at the time be it a 7 , 8 or 9 series the APU needs to hybrid crossfire and give you a nice 20%-30% boost onto your card, further more if they could do that and as the cpu portion grows stronger allow for crossfire GPU + APU (hybrid trifire) this would make system building combinations much more 'interesting' even if ultimately it wasn't the fastest it would be the most fun to mess around with.

i digress

for a HTPC+NAS build even with rip off tax added :

1 x AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) £45.98
1 x MSI A55M-E33 AMD A55 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £40.99
1 x OcUK Imp MicroATX Tower Case (500w PSU) £29.99
1 x Sony DDU1681S-0B 18x DVD-ROM (Black) - OEM £13.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite 2GB (1x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Single Channel Module (TED32GM1333C901) £9.95

Total : £248.89 (includes shipping : £10.00) or £230 for the A8-5500 (which is better suited to the RAM and board)

bargain HTPC, there are some HTPC cases alone that cost as much as the entire system and your average gaming PSU is £100. There are other combinations, prices will fall too so you can make a decent computer for £200 ! if you can find a decent spare psu and can do without a DVD drive then its even cheaper still into cheap 7" tablet money.

So yes its slower than people would like but it has to be put in context the above system is four times cheaper than my gaming PC and save for a few select gaming titles will do pretty much the SAME thing.

Trinity A10 requires 1866Mhz to be effectively not bottlenecked.  A single channel 1333Mhz kit I reckon would result in a 50%+ bottleneck over proper dual channel DDR3-1866.
