Upgrading my rig

Thread Starter
My current specs are down below.

That being said, I know there is no reason what so ever to upgrade but hey a man needs his shinny toys.

I was thinking on going for a i7-3930K, have heard some bad reviews on overclocking heating.

Along with an X79 Board, heard some they had some bad USB Issues along with OC'ing and bios issues.

I plan on selling my 680 for a 690.

Upgrading my PSU to a 1200w or 1000w, not sure.

Upgrading case to a Corsair 800D.

Also plan on upgrading to dual monitors, for gaming & movies etc. Been thinking on some dells not sure.

Now I have thought on going for custom water cooling, but noise is not an issue for me so I can easily manage air. Still undecided on this issue.

I will be updating this thread constantly, If you have any suggestions feel free to share. smile.gif

Update #1:
The reason I plan on going for a 1000w+ PSU is because I plan on going for a second 690 after I buy my first one.

I'll take a look at the Z77 boards.

As for dual monitors, I will only use them mostly for multi-tasking make work easier. And 1 for gaming second for mutli-tasking/monitor temps.

Update #2:
I'm thinking on going for 2x Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24"
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-2676&~ck=baynoteSearch&baynote_bnrank=7&baynote_irrank=0

Might hold back on the PSU for now.

Still undecided for the CPU & Mobo

Stick with the Z series of motherboards ie the Z77, have heard much better things about them than the other series. 1000W PSU upgrade not neccesary at all for a single graphics card, even multi GPU only really needs 700W at most. And dual monitors can't be used for gaming or movies for the most part. Edit: although i do highly recommend one for internet browsing & general multitasking, just don't expect it to work in games.

With a 3930k and X79, you're looking at a much higher price point than if you were to go with an IB / Z77, but if money isn't an issue, I'd say go for an X79. Lot's of room to expand, IB-e later on (possibly), and you'd have full x16/x16 for your 690's, but with IB/Z77 you'd only be getting x8/x8. Although this ASUS P8Z77 WS appears to be able to do x16/x16, at around the same price for an X79 Sabertooth.

Sorry, saw the 3 and assumed it was an IB chip, didn't look at the number, lol. I don't really know much about SB-e but as mentioned above I think you will be fine with an IB chip, and save yourself some money.

buy the PSU WHEN you upgrade the video card. why lose some life out of it when you don't need to? besides, by the time you want a second 690, there might be newer shinier toys.
