What are the odds of an OC being stable after 1 hour of P95?

Thread Starter
Do they jump significantly? I'm currently 1 hour into a stability test and wondering if I can go to sleep. Before this, I was dealing with Prime 95 crashing - not my PC (I understand thats very close to stable).

EDIT: I do plan to do +12 hours smile.gif

Make sure you have all the error checking turned on in the advanced tab, But from experience it means it's pretty stable, but could still fail. I've had a few P95 runs fail after 4hrs+.

Yeah this, dw about it just leave it running while you sleep. you can check if it crashed by looking at the txt file

I can never find the time to run it for very long. An hour is the most i've ever went, but after hours of BF3 online on 64 payer servers and The Witcher 2 that are demanding on a CPU, I take that as the system being stable.

Odds of a failure, without doing a lot more testing, are hard to say. The long you can successfully test, the rarer errors are likely to be.

i have seen many systems and configurations that were noticeably unstable in general use pass more than an hour of Prime95.

It wasn't stable frown.gif
There was an error that caused P95 to shut down. I bumped LLC to level 2 and +0.005 vCore. I'll test it the next time I have 12 hours to spare rolleyes.gif

With that said, I have a 3770k that'll do 6 hours (before adjustments) of P95 @ 4.7GHz w/HT on

Why don't you use OCCT for short term testing?

I don't use P95 until I finalize an OC with OCCT. You could spend weeks only testing with P95 since it needs so much time..

Imo you should use more than one program to test for stability. I use p95 and ibt with avx. I could do 2 hours on p95 blend but ibt with avx crashed out after 2 passes. I also think testing for 12 hours and more is a waste of time and causing unwanted chip degradation. This sort of intense testing should only be done if you are.going to be folding for long periods of time or some other high CPU utilization. Running 25 or 30 passes of ibt with avx and 5 or 6 hours of p95 should be plenty for.someone.who is a casual gamer

To each their own I guess. I find IBT to be useless except for generating unrealistic heat. OCCT and P95 are more sensitive. Memtest I find to be nearly useless while alot of people think it's great. P95 Blend is far more sensitive for RAM testing, minutes instead of hours.

And yes I'd only run P95 as a final test. As far as the time goes, 8-10 hours is best (overnight basically). If you can't pass it, you're just not stable, casual gamer or not. I don't want to deal with any random instabilities/weirdness at all, even if it's once/week and random. That's what you'll get if you're "mostly" stable.

If you don't want ANY randomness and weirdness, you need to run P95 for 24 hours if doing a default blend. That will run through all the tests it has. Also, use v27.7 so as to run with AVX. OCCT and IBT are essentially the same CPU tests. They both use LinX. OCCT just pushes the GPU as well.
