E6700 Baseline Voltage tests....

Well, I have been testing for the lowest voltage this CPU can run on at stock for about 2 weeks now or so. I have been folding between tests periods so it has taken a while but I am almost at the end. I only have 2 more steps to drop voltage, this board doesn't have any settings for vCore under 1.00v.

This board has some droop, about 0.05 of it to be exact. The first test was run at approx 1.2375, as you can see under full load it reads at 1.176. I selected that starting point for this CPU as the control test (all setting stock, vcore on AUTO) showed the CPU was drawing 1.28v at full load. Since I have my Pentium D 920 running at 3.8Ghz with 1.2875v, I figured the Core 2 Duo CPU should need less than that.

Here are my first 5 tests, I took the screenshot for 1.168 too soon (10 hours) and forgot to take another one after the 12 hour mark, but subsquent tests have shown the system stable at lower voltage so I am not to worried about that.

Since I can only attach 5 images per post, here are my last 3 tests so far.

I am currently running the test for 1.125 (1.080 after droop on full load), I am going to let it run till morning, taking it over 20 hours if it can pass. So I should be at the lowest voltage this week, either it will fail a test soon, or I will hit the limit this board will allow.


I found it interesting, this morning when I entered the next lowest step on vcore in the BIOS and rebooted, the system beeped in alarm and the post message displayed a CPU OVERVOLTAGE WARNING.

I shut down the system and went back into BIOS to verify the vcore setting and found it correct at 1.125, so I exited and it POSTed with the same message. I let it boot into Windows and have verified the voltage with PC Probe, Speedfan, and CPUz.

That's an odd little error......

Im surprized that the temps arent lower...
Very nice by the way...

I have my es e6700 running at 4.2 folding with a vCore of 1.41 note my phase is really acting up so its only cooling it to -15c under load at 1.38 which is horrible for the Chilly.

These chips are wonderful and I particularly like the research and effort you put into finding the lowest stable vCore well done Thumper!!!

Well, I am using this crappy 9500

And I switched cases a few tests ago (went from my MozartTx to this Stacker) but I didn't notice a large change in temps from that. If I was using my Noctua on it, I am sure my load temps would be around 30c.


I'm actually disappointed, my conservitive goal was to run this on 1.00v, but I was holding out hope to drop to the lowest level listed by Intel....0.850v, and maybe even lower....but the board simply doesn't support voltage that low.

Don't happen to know of any volt mods to LOWER vcore do you

Once I hit the bottom, I will start overclocking from there and see what I find.

LOL this is a great point you made here, so many people think you have to set the Vcore to 1.30 or whatever is on the box right off the bat and some even more, Ive done this on almost every chip Ive used to see the minimal voltage needed to run at a set speed. Ive always been able to use the boards lowest settings to run all my dual core chips(1.165v).

Nice Thumper! Ya too bad you can't go lower. It would be interesting to see how far over stock speeds a core2 could go, with even less voltage like .85 . These chips are great, you can get huge oc's and still be whithin stock volts. If you can get your volts lower with a mod or something, I'd be very interested to see your results .

off topic[ What do you think of that mozart case thumper, anywhere near worth the money??]

Since we are nearing the end, I am letting the tests run longer, want to be very sure about stabability.

It passed the 1.08(after droop) test yesterday, just haven't had time to post yet until now.

I am letting it fold a little now, but will start the next test tonight after work, if it runs the whole test and passes I'll have that result on Thursday evening.

Once you find the lowest vCore can you try and OC a bit at that level and see how high it will go?

Also curious about power consumption at that level...sounds like a cheap folding solution from a power consumption perspective.

Oh, yes, once I find the lowest that is where I will start my overclocking from, I doubt I'll get more than +10FSB at 1.00v though, but it will be interesting to see how it goes.

I bet someone better at complex math than me could use an equation to determine the specific power savings.

Well, that's the end of the road......

I was wrong BTW, the lowest setting on this board with 0711 BIOS is 1.100v. With it on this setting CPU-z showed the voltage at 1.056v, and the system failed one of the Stress Prime tests after 2 hours and 52 minutes.

So, the lowest stable voltage on this E6700 is 1.072, the screenshot showing dual Stress Prime runs over 20 hours at this voltage is attached.

Right now, I have reset the voltage to 1.125 (1.072 after droop) and increased my FSB to 270 and have 2 Stress Prime tests running. We will see if it passes again for the same time period with the higher FSB.....and then move on up.

I'm not sure if I should be disappointed, the Intel spec lists voltage as low as 0.85 IIRC, and while this board obviously couldn't take me there, I was hoping to at least pass the lowest I could go. But, since no one else has done this type of testing I don't have anything to compare to.
