Motherboard whining under heavy load

Thread Starter
Specs in sig rig.

Something on my motherboard (I'm guessing mosfets / VRMS) is whining under load. It seems to increase (noise wise) when more vcore is added, or all six cores are enabled. With my normal specs (sig rig) 4.0ghz @ 1.425v doesn't make any noise unless its under Prime or IBT.

Its not the PSU, It can be heard right over the VRM heatsink. The heatsink itself has an 80mm fan blowing on it, as well as a 120mm fan right over the ram / NB heatsink and CPU waterblock.

What do you guys think, motherboard going or is that normal? And btw, its not in a case.

I only pointed that out because of how loud it is. It audible enough that I can hear it over the fans, but its not uber loud.

unplug fans and make sure it isent the fans

Just tried it. The VRM heatsink gets very hot but the whining is still there.

My old ASUS did this. Nothing to worry about, its probably coil whine.

Did it do it with Vcore increase tho?

Just an example:

4.0ghz @ 1.4v = Very little whine under load.

4.1ghz @ 1.45v = An audible whine but not too loud.

4.2+ ghz @ 1.5+ v = A noticeable whine and a white noise type of sound as well.

I connected a multimeter to the PSU to see what was going on as well. With no load, the 12v rail fluctuates from 12.22v to 12.10v. Using Intel Burn Test and Furmark (CPU @ 1.575v w/ 6 cores) the 12v rail is 11.98 - 12.01 and hardly moves at all.

Yea it did it only when OCed / overvolted.

But is it still alive today wink.gif

I've also noticed that @ 1.5v+ I get random shut downs with no BSOD's. I guess the mosfets/vrms can't handle that much voltage. Time for an upgrade I guess, lol.

Thanks guys + rep.

I had this same issue with a 1366 intel i7 920. I forget what it was exactly, but I know it was something in the BIOS settings. Perhaps try playing with the OC settings and see if that resolves it.
