Building my HTPC tonight

Thread Starter
After browsing a few threads in this forum, I've decided to join the HTPC club and make my own. This will be used for 1:1 ISO bluray playing along with Hulu+ on a 46" 1080p 120hz Samsung I just got.

Here's the parts:

620

Along with a 320GB 7200RPM boot drive and 3x 3TB drives in Raid 5.

This will be in the newly released Silverstone Grandia GD08 HTPC case.

443

I'll post some more pictures of the build later tonight. Won't be moving into my new apartment until the 5th though...but I'll take pictures of the HTPC setup when it's all finished when I'm all moved in.

Update 5/27

Here's the pictures:

Yeah, can't wait to get this going. I'm really satisfied with Hulu+ and Netflix.

How do you like your GD05? I almost went with the GD07 for the front panel design.

I'm torn.. I love the look of it, but there are several things I would have changed. I'm not a fan of putting a HDD directly over the PSU with no air flow. The cable management can be fairly difficult as well. All in all though I'd buy it again if nothing else just for the looks.

Here's hoping. I was having a hard time actually determining the specific hardware demands of uncompressed bluray playback, so I just went a little over to make sure it was done right. If anything it can handle "gaming", sorta (not counting on it).

I do love the looks of the series in general. I'm pretty picky about cable management myself, but as long as the cables aren't impeding function, I'll get over it. Almost went full modular but the price turned me away.

I'm using a modular PSU and the connections block one of the fans. But I guess they didn't have a lot of room to work with as it's not the biggest case. On that side it just cools the main HDD though. Mine "should" provide air to my 560ti so that's why I'm not a big fan of the cable management, I would imagine 1/3 or more of the flow is blocked by the cables.

my sempron 140 overclocked did ok with 1080p video some stuttering here and there, i'm almost sure if i had cuda working at the time to offset cpu usage it would have worked out, but i had the opportunity to upgrade so i grabbed a used 965 and board plus a gpu for home use and it's been running silent and as fast as ever. smile.gif

i woudlnt worry too much about hdd heat they can withstand a decent temp without having any issues.

Just curious. If I'll be using the optical output, is there use for a sound card in the HTPC? I've got an Omega Striker 7.1 card in my computer now; would the HTPC benefit from it?

This setup is going to be paired with this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882120176 - Onkyo TX-NR509 5.1

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882981013 - Martin Logan 5.1

not any reason to use a dedicated card if your going to be using optical out the signal with be unchanged digital to digital. you could go hdmi from you video card into your receiver and just pass sound that way. what i do on my setup works great
