need help building computer for parents

Thread Starter
A few months ago i built myself a gaming pc, now my dad would like my help sprucing up the old home computer. The computer is a dell dimension 9100 so i am going to basically start from scratch. the most graphically intensive thing it will be doing is probably youtube videos and PowerPoint, but if need be i would like it to be able to run a few modern games ( just in case my parents want to try some gaming). i would like to keep the whole thing under $450, we already have mouse and keyboard and monitor so this is just for the build.I am not sure what would be the best cpu/motherboard/gpu choices for something like this. i would like some advice on how to go about it.Does not matter if intel or amd. i will not be checking on this page for a while due to being out of town but would appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Easy as pie. I actually JUST built my own father a new rig.

AMD A8-3870k APU
ASUS A75 chipset mobo (mATX or ATX, your choice) You can even try out an ITX A75 board if you feel so inclined.
At the minimum 1600 CAS 9 RAM, 1866 would be better for the A8-3870k as it actually effects performance due to the lack of L3 cache. 4gb or 8gb depending on what you think he needs
I used a Corsair builder series 420w PSU, got it for like ~$15 after rebate.
Throw it in whatever case you want.
I would highly recommend a SSD for a boot drive. Anything less just seems clunky now-a-days.

EDIT: check out my 2nd sig rig to see the APU build.

Sooo, when would your parents be interested in gaming? this makes it seem like this rig will be for your needs not theirs. Is windows included in the budget?

If not, look at these: $423 Intel build (Click to show)
PCPartPicker part list

CPU: Intel Pentium G630 2.7GHz Dual-Core Processor ($65.99 @ Mac Mall)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H61M-DS2 Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($43.99 @ NCIX US)
Memory: Wintec Value 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($21.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Hitachi 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Crucial M4 64GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon HD 6670 1GB Video Card ($46.97 @ Newegg)

Power Supply: Antec 430W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($38.25 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($17.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $395.15
$450 AMD build (Click to show)
PCPartPicker part list

Motherboard: Asus F1A55-M LX PLUS Micro ATX FM1 Motherboard ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($23.99 @ Newegg)

Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($17.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $427.15

If you need windows, You could drop the SSD and pick up windows. I am not really fond of this, since this is for your parents, the most "speed" they will notice will be from the SSD.

For a gaming machine you should grab the AMD build, it will have better gaming performance. If there is little chance of gaming, you could grab the Intel build. It has a better CPU.

IMO I would drop the GPU all together, I mean, most people who want a PC just need onboard and if they "want to game" they play on consoles.
I would grab something like this for my parents
$400 i3 build (Click to show)
PCPartPicker part list

CPU: Intel Core i3-2100 3.1GHz Dual-Core Processor ($89.99 @ Microcenter)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H61M-DS2 Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($43.99 @ NCIX US)
Memory: Wintec Value 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($21.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Hitachi 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Crucial M4 64GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($79.99 @ Newegg)

Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($17.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $372.18

... The point behind the APU is it has much better graphics than Intel's integrated, Plus if need be down the line you can double the graphics with a pretty cheap GPU and it will be totally viable for gaming. A SSD is a must for your parents as that is what they will be using the most, it is the biggest performance gain for your money possible with a daily driver. Plus CPU power really doesn't make a difference anymore for that. Anything modern can handle Windows without breaking a sweat, pair it wil a SSD and visible performance will be as good as a multi-thousand dollar rig.

lol I said that, but in reality. If you just want to "play games" any $40 GPU will be enough. If this build is really for his parents, the iGPU from the APU will go to waste since they will not be using it.

Yes, but an A8-3870k will pretty much future proof a daily driver until the hardware fails at this point. Plus it's Quad vs the Dual which gets you extra epeen.

The price is really 100% worth it imo. Plus it gives the builder the option to play with it more through OCing and such.

Again this is for his parents, His parents may be using the iGPU @10%? and that would be pushing it. A 1155 SB dual core will have much more CPU power than a llano quad. It is essentially a re branded Athlon in terms of CPU performance. IMO a llano build is nice if you are guaranteed that gaming will be done on the system.

Also, overclocking on a parent's machine is a no-no.

I belive that A4 would fit the budget at 360.00 out the door for something thats very compairable to intel for 100.00 less thats hard to touch
