Help me choose between these two motherboards

Thread Starter
I have a 3.4GHZ 800FSB P4 CPU, northwood 512k. So I'm trying to decide between to available motherboard configrations that I like, based on how mainly RAM will come into play to achive the best overclocking results. what would be better:

1-ECS P4M800PRO-M478 a Via chip motherboard with DDR2-533(266mhz) with (single channel mode)+ my CPU?

2-other Intel chip based motherboard with DDR400(200mhz) with (dual channel support)+ my CPU?

This is all assuming that the bios on all otherboard of intrest are overclock friendly, and please disregard brand and quality issues.

VIA chipsets are known not to overclock very well because of their lack of a PCI/AGP bus lock.

I know, but lets focus on the memory factor of it.

I would go with the Intel based for 3 reasons. 1. DDR400 is 3200mbps and in dual channel it is doubled 6400mbps, theoreticaly. While DDR2 533 is 4267 mbps. 2. Intel just works better with Intel. 3. Overclockabillity.

I would go with the ASUS P4P800 series boards. I have personally used them, plus they are praised by every owner of one.

but the DDR2 533 bus speed is higher than my cpu bus speed 266/200, would'nt that give more headroom for overclocking? rather than the DDR400, 200/200?

I checked the menu from Asus for this board P4P800-VM.

is the bios tweakble for overclocking? it dosn't say that you can change values in the manual, but I could be wrong.

I agree with adam144 VIA chipsets in my experience are poor to overclock for 1 reason. I had an ASUS board on my old A 64 system and the PCI/AGP bus would not lock even though the option was in the bios. I managed an oc of 2.0GHz to 2.3GHz (10 x 230fsb). With the fsb this high, not locking the pci/agp bus can be very dangerous to your system and can cause you to lose data from your hard drive. If you must go for a VIA chipset try before you buy and check if the PCI/AGP bus lock actually works! Just because you have the option to change it in the bios means nothing, Ive seen a few systems (like my old A 64 and others) that just wont even start to boot when you apply the bus lock. If you can find a VIA board that doesnt have this problem then i cant think why not to go for one because mine was great apart from that 1 thing. That one thing let a potentially great overclock to be a very average one.
Good look with whatever you decide!
