4x120x60mm overkill for single cpu/gpu?

Thread Starter
I am looking to put together a water cooled rig together for a friend. Single CPU and graphics card (probably 7970) OC'd as much as I can. I am looking to use a Fractal Designs Arc Mini case and want to use 2 Alphacool NexXxoS UT60's. One on the front (remove both HDD cages) and one on top (using low-profile Samsung ram). Both will most likely be a pull configuration with some AP-15's.

Is this overkill? This will be my first water-cooled setup (if he decides to go through with it) and I am not sure just how crazy I need to go. Any other suggestions are of course always welcome smile.gif.

You're asking OCN if a cooling solution is overkill?

No that's just about right for a CPU/GPU loop.

I used 360 + 240 for CPU and 2 GPU's and temps were pretty good. 240 + 240 should be great for CPU + GPU.

Another radiator option I have been looking at is the Black Ice SR-1 240. Not sure which would be the better choice? UT60 is thicker but the SR-1 240 seems to be geared more towards lower-speed fans (such as the ap-15's). Not sure how much of that is marketing though!

haha, I should have seen those replies coming :-P.

Awesome deal! I'd just rather save him money if it wasn't going to affect temps all that much. Thank you guys for the replies smile.gif.

a single 120.3 (360) x60mm can control the CPU and single GPU. with a push'pull
fan configuration. 4x is overkill and finding room in a down-sized case is ludicrious.
may i ask this?
what kinda performance do you think the water cooling will give you?
if you are looking for 15°-25° temperature drop with this, then you need to look into
another type of thermal solution. bigger or more radiators doesnt mean the temps
come crashing down, it usually means the temps come down 5°-8° and will
stabilize for a 24/7 amount of time.

Well my ambient is like 27c in here now (damned summer!) so no, it won't be that cool. He is just wanting something future proof and something that kicks ass without anything crazy (sub-ambient). He also doesn't want a huge full-size tower. This mini will fit a 2 fat 240mm rads, pump, etc just fine. Really just need to decide on fans/radiator now smile.gif.

I got a 35mm RAD with PUSH/PULL fans @ 5v and i do fine. I could go lower if i added another 120mm. Or i could just increase fans speed but i hate noise.

^^^ That's why I have decided a thicker core with 1 fan would be better over a skinnier one w/ 2. Noise sucks...PC's are usually what, 2-3 feet from you? Can't have it sounding like a jet going off unless it's purely a benching rig ha

Any thoughts on the Black Ice SR-1 240 vs the Alphacool NexXxoS UT60? And fan selection (I plan on using ap-15's..but open to suggestions)?
