Computer restarts while playing BF3.

Thread Starter
Basically what the title says, my computer will randomly restart while playing BF3. Other games, and folding don't experience this problem, and it doesn't freeze, or BSOD before it happens. What do I need to try?

BF3 puts pretty much stress on everything, and looking at your PSU, Cooler Master has some crappy PSUs. I don't know if that is the case here, but you should try a different PSU.

Sounds like it may be PSU. Swap it out if you can.

I would do some pretty in depth troubleshooting before you go buying any new components.

I have seen this issue on many of my friends PC's, it seems like an obvious PSU issue at first, but 80% of the time it will turn out to be a RAM issue with BF3.

If you can, swap out your RAM for a friends or any other compatible RAM, don't pull one or two sticks out of your existing and try diff combos, this can be decieving sometimes. Try completely different or new RAM before anything else, its cheaper and a good chance you will fix it.

Also, check your event logs

Click start>run(or just the search bar on win7>type "eventvwr" (without the ") and hit enter

Look through all the lists, Application/System/ and try see if you are getting an error code. Let me know what it is and i'll try steer you in the right direction.

Cheers.

If the computer just straight up restarts, it's likely a PSU issue not being able to handle load. If it was RAM or any other component, it wouldn't likely simply restart, it would crash or freeze.

You can try running the game on the lowest possible settings to see if it resolves the issue then go from there, Most likely PSU issue as others suggested..

That's usually the case, however BF3 causes many Pc's to just hard reset due to RAM issues. There is a well documented error code for it, sucks, but unfortunately very present.

Also, as the OP said it's only happening in BF3 (very gpu/cpu intensive) if that's the case then run a GPU/CPU benchmark and see if you can replicate it. You will then know more clearly if it's the BF3 RAM issue. Please use the event viewer, a simple tool that can often help put you on the right track, that's what it's there for smile.gif

No, his GPU would / will handle BF3 just fine. The issue from what we can so far see here is OP's PSU cannot handle load voltages and is straight shutting off / restarting to catch a break. In order to be sure though, he'll need to do as we suggested in either replacing the PSU or checking with a multimeter.
