Alright A friend of mine has some problems with his bootloader and I've made him try everything I can think of, but nothing helps.

Situation:

HD = Seagate 250GB sata with 4 partitions for OS's and 1 for storage.

He installed WinXP first, then Win server '03.
Everything's fine, he gets a bootloader from windows to choose from these two OS's.

Next he installs Vista RC1, here's where the issue begins, because after he exits Vista and reboots, there is still the OLD bootloader from server 03 and he cannot choose Vista.
He messed a bit with boot.ini but that didn't help and Vista isn't an selectable from the boot menu.

So he tells me he planned on installing Ubuntu, so I told him to just go ahead and do so, 'cause the GRUB would install over the windows bootloader.
It didn't.

Still the same bootloader.

So I tell him to open recovery console and do fixmbr and fixboot, so he could install grub again after the bootloader would be erased.

Both have no effect at all.
Still the same bootloader.

I'm stumped.. could there be something with the HD that doesn't allow anything to be written to the MBR ??
Or could anything else be wrong with it?

EDIT: just told him to try and disable boot sector / virus / mbr protection in his BIOS and retry fixmbr.. hope that works
