Golden Sun? Only turn-based I ever played, liked. and completed.

My favorite RPG though was Beyond Oasis on Genesis. Graphics are top-down 2D, in a cartoon style, and hold up decently.

A close 2nd is Alundra on PSX.

I thought Dragon Age Origins was a really good game and would seem to fit into this category.

Hmmm ... thinking.gif

That sounds like something japanese ...

Suikoden V , maybe ? GREAT characters and 108 characters at that . Some are mages and warriors those are playable , the others are NPCs like chefs and your war lords , war strategist and even archelogists and the such ( not sure , have not played it in years ) . And they come in all shapes and forms like beavers for instance . You have to recruit them to your cause , but some are recruited automatically . Some have their own quests some dont . And they have their little details that make them much more interesting , like Kyle's ( a womanizer biggrin.gif ) jump infront female characters when they are low on health to take enemy hits for them , or his rage whenever one of them fall in battle . Or even the characters little sauna scenes and interactions .

And there are some strategy combat were you control all of the army unique units with their special attacks .

I could not emphasize above more than that on how great the characters are , like the skimpy , pink haired mage Jeane , or the clumsy teleporting teenage girl viki ( If I remember correctly her first lines were " What era is this ? " because she have been in alot of the other games , and differrent points in time ) . And there is Georg prime !!! . Anyways those are just three characters , the others are just as great .

To the OP , or anyone interested in JRPGs . Do yourself a favor and get this game . IT IS the MOST underrated JRPG of the PS2 era , it got everything , story , characters , gameplay .

And I am done . biggrin.gif

Edit : And you would need a guide , for some characters are missable and can be lost after set periods in the game . Thats if you want to recruit all 108 .

1+ to fallout and BG, kinda thought NWN sucked story-wise though. motb was good though

some others with great stories:

-planescape torment, most enthralling and interesting story ive played through
-vampire the masquerade: bloodlines (especially if you're into the pen and paper game or want to get into it, MASSIVE amounts of lore and stories and characters and novels)
-arcanum, i liked the story but the setting was really ingenious and alot of fun. huge game with plenty of replayability

all these games are rpg to the core. stat systems and customisation, specific classes, choice and consequence, plot and dialogue, non-linear experiences etc etc

Dark Souls
Skyrim

Those are the best of this current generation

For final fantasy, go get the unofficial fan retranslation of final fantasy 6 and experience a vastly superior version.
