Today's Updates: May 15th

Thread Starter
Greetings! smile.gif You perhaps noticed some downtime this afternoon for a longer-than-anticipated round of updates - thanks for bearing with us as we took care of some database work.

Here are the release notes for today:

Javascript Performance Improvements
As part of our ongoing work on improving performance, we recently made some significant optimizations to the amount of Javascript we load onto the page. Here are the general results of these improvements:
  • Chrome showed an 18% reduction in memory usage.
  • Firefox showed a 15% increase performance. Memory usage was not significantly different.
  • IE9 was very similar to Firefox - pages also load about 15% faster.
  • IE8 showed improvements in both memory usage and performance, with a 25% reduction in memory usage and 35% increase in performance. IE8's load times are a full second faster now (from 2700ms to 1750ms)!

The way we're measuring performance in this case is the decrease in lag from when the initial page displays, to when Javascript features are usable.

Other Minor Functionality Improvements

RTE Upgraded

We upgraded the version of CKEditor we use to version 3.6.3. Here is the list of the CK Editor bugs that were fixed by upgrading.

Hide Empty Personal Albums
We no longer display empty personal albums on galleries portal page and category pages. This should help clean up the appearance of album lists in galleries.

Bug Fixes
Here's the list of bugs fixed with this release:

9077 - Fix bug that was preventing some users from posting
6880 - Clean up signature for users who are no longer Industry Insiders so that they no longer get the Insider signature
8813 - Correctly handle auto-link URLs with parenthesis, such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_(film)
8841 - Only count guests who can successfully access a forum in the "Currently Viewing" for a forum (this mainly affects private forums)
9202 - Albums that were once popular were getting "stuck" in the popular albums display and never go away. They now go away if they are surpassed by other albums
9131 - Tweak verbiage around unsubscribing from comment notifications to tell users to go to their account details
9149 - Display appropriate error message when users leave trader feedback without a URL
9093 - ALT+S (or CTRL+Enter) now correctly submits posts for members who were having issues with this
9154 - Trader feedback number is now displayed again on trader feedback page

In case anyone's wondering about the JS improvements, or feels no difference in speed, here's an explanation as to what the changes actually mean (taken from the platform release candidate forum).
Quote:
When we say there was a 35% improvement in IE8, that's not a 35% improvement in overall performance. It's a 35% improvement in the lag time between when the page is visible and when Javascript controls are usable. Here's one example: I use the pop-down menu in the top "Forums" tab a lot. Sometimes, as the page loads, I'm sitting there with my mouse over it but it doesn't respond yet. This menu is JS powered so it's an example of something that should load and work sooner now.

The improvements in this release are really really nice and I think users will feel them - I just want to underscore the actual scope of the improvement. Keep this in mind when messaging to users about what they should expect.
