cheap build for a teacher...

Thread Starter
well i recently did a small project on computers in school. one of my teachers came to me and asked if i could put together a quote for him. its for BASIC internet and other small things. id also like to put a core 2 in it, but other wise im hoping to keep this around and hopefully under $500 doller range. this is a major budget build so price must be as low as it can go.
ill be asking him if he wants to include any parts from his old computer so but just to cover the bases ill need a full build.
thanks

EDIT:

cd-rom
case and power
harddrive
memory
mobo
xp
core 2
pent d

now if i were to put a pent d instead of the core 2 it would
drop the price quite a bit

If all he wants is basic Internet and word processing stuff...you can go even cheaper. Get a barebones setup: Case, PSU and Intel MoBO:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16856121001

For a limited time: 80$ WITH a Celeron 2.13GHZ proc!!!!! EDIT Dual core!

That's right. PSU case, processor, mainboard, ONBOARD video, audio, AND LAN!!! FOR 80 freakin DOLLARS! Granted we are not talkin a speed demon...but, for another 100$ you got your ATA HDD and DVD-R/W ROM. add about 100$ for a bunch of RAM. Keyboard/mouse = 25$ and monitor is 150$.

So that's about 450$.

Anyway...A barebone might be the way to go.

This would be my minimum recommendation, based on AMD. Core 2 Duo is nice, but you don't have enough budget to warrant it (other components lagging behind, esp. motherboard). On either platform, if you get a mobo with onboard graphics, the Biostart tForce is one of the few boards that allows for overclocking.

Here is my list:Total: $587.43

Comments:
  • 1GB RAM is the minimum. Don't settle for 512MB, even if you plan to add later. Get 1GB and add more for 2GB later.
  • As stated, if you get mATX and want to overclock, you don't have many choices.
  • I picked an ATX case. Easier if he wants to upgrade later.

great ill send this to him and see wut happens. i looked at dell and the clossest was around $600 for a dual core. but then again it also has a 19inch moniter. tiger direct has a 17 for around $90 till end of the month, but it waill still be a couple dollers cheaper then dell

the 805 scores 1371 on 3dmark06 cpu and the am2 scores 1555
so thats a improvment

even with the stock cooling how far do you think i can get with overclock, 2.5?

thanks to all
