and wanted to build a quad G34 rig with it. This is what I came up with:

Mobo: TYAN S8812WGM3NR MEB Server Motherboard Quad Socket

PSU: CORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX1200

Procs: AMD Opteron 6174 Magny-Cours 2.2GHz (4x)

Cooling: Corsair H80 (4x)

RAM: Crucial Ballistix 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (32x)

Video: EVGA 04G-P4-2690-KR GeForce GTX 690 4GB

Storage1: OCZ VeloDrive 1.2TB (3x)

Storage2: OCZ Talos 2 C Series 960GB 2.5" Dual-Port SAS

Backups: HITACHI H3IK40003272SP (0S03355) 4TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s

Only thing I'm curious about is the SAS. Am I doin' it right?

What changes would you make? Assume we are using a case where all four H80s can be mounted properly.

Honestly. That would be cool but i would defiantly buy hard drives, smaller ssd just recently dropped pretty significantly it would only be reasonable to assume that the larger ones will do the same sometime soon.

Next since the cpus to my knowledge can not be overclocked immensely there is no real need for more than a mid range air cooler each.

I'm not saying the build would not be awesome but it just seems very inefficient price wise.

If you want a quad G34 setup you can do it easily for like $2k - $5k depending on parts. That's some insane amount of money you are putting into the storage part of that build. Is that really necessary? You also don't need H80's for the coolers.. Hyper 212+'s are WAY MORE than sufficient. Another thing is you want some tight timing 1333MHz RAM not typical 1600 because they don't support anything past 1333.

I'd chop $25k off that budget and buy car.

If I had 30K lying about, I'd first start off by making sure I had the best possible MoBo and CPU (meaning the ASUS Rampage IV Extreme and the 3690X), make sure I have Quad CrossfireX (4x 7970) or two 690s in SLI mode perhaps, go for LN2 instead of watercooling although Phase Change cooling will definately do my trick too, and 64GB of 2400MHz RAM. Once I've got that, I'd overclock it to its maximum.

Once that's done, I know the interior of the PC is in order. I'd stick with the case I have now, the Cosmos II, for it's simply awesome and gorgeous.
Then I would start thinking about external things. A PS3, an Xbox 360, tons of games for both, 6 50" TVs/Monitors, a better/bigger desk and rolling chair, a mechanical keyboard, an awesome gaming mouse, external bluray player and HDD recorder, a tablet PC, a 700$ laptop for backup means (in case you somehow destroy your pc), a 7.1 surround speakerset, etc etc.

I agree, just choose a single-cpu MoBo and put the best CPU in existance in it. (I suppose that's the 3690X since you have the money)

The best bet is to build a 4p G34 setup and a really awesome gaming rig using X79 or something.

You can't overclock the Tyan board. It also wouldn't be very good at gaming at all. BF3 maybe...



You'd be better off building the 4p and using it for folding/video editing/file storage (compression/decompression) and then getting a z77 or x79 rig for gaming with the gtx 690.... not to mention 30grand is far far too much lol.
