Is 3g fast enough?

Thread Starter
Hey - I am staying in a camper all summer while I have an internship. The campground wireless does not reach to the back corner where my camper is. I'm thinking about biting the bullet and getting verizon mobile hotspot and just tether from my phone. Will 3g be fast enough to game with? I've done a few speed tests and it seems to average between .5-2Mb/s up and about .3-.5Mb/s down. That doesn't seem terribly slow but just want to get another opinion before I commit.

Your going to be getting lag spikes like crazy! It should work though, just that the quality of the play wont be there redface.gif

The latency of 3G is the main concern, and is typically in the ~350ms range.
If you jump for a 4G hotspot and that area is covered (although fairly unlikely for a campground) you could viably game as most destinations within a geographical area would respond in a sub 100 ms timeframe.

Yeah - I understand that the quality won't be immaculate - but it should at least get me through the summer

I thought I would be able to last the summer without playing d3 - but yeah... 2 days after release and I'm already freaking out about not playing.

Well - I got off the phone with Verizon and apparently all I qualify for is a 2gb limit whit out having to buy into one of their retarded mifi plans. The only other option I have is to run a USB wireless adapter about 50 yards out from my camper and the signal is still a little spotty. Could I get that to work?

When I have attempted to game on a 3g connection previously, my pings were typically >100ms.

For some games that will be acceptable, for others less than ideal.

A USB adapter 50 yards away won't work. USB doesn't power a cable that far.
