X58 with 6gb Samsung DDR3

Thread Starter
I'm in the process of gathering components for my upgrade to IB. My RAM is currently RMA'ed and I stopped into Microcenter last night to see what they had. There was one retail pair of 2gb 30nm Samsung DDR3, and a single 2gb stick that was returned but never opened. The return stick was only $9(!) and the pair cost $27 so I grabbed them.

Since there are some variables I have to consider, my plan was to leave the RAM in the packaging so I could return it if something else was more suitable. Diablo III is out and it's killing me to stare at the box. Should this work fine in tri-channel with the three sticks?

If so, are there differences in voltage settings I need to be aware of for the i7-950/X58 setup? Thanks!

there are no 2gb 30nm chips......

unless there single sidded....
but that would kill your memory bandwidth...

There are definitely 2gb 30nm sticks since I'm lookin at them, but they are single sided. I had 10 minutes before the store closed and grabbed them. Looking at my manual I was under the impression the bandwidth change was insignificant in most cases.

I'll see what the return policy is on RAM and maybe get to test it and see. Thanks for the info and any other feedback is appreciated!

it wont be noticeable in a daily configuration to warrant taking them back but you will see the difference in benches.

Well, I got an email from Microcenter for $15 off anything today. When I checked online my local store had 2 x 4gb kits so I returned the three sticks of 2gb and got three 4gb for only ~$22 more. biggrin.gif

Going to slap it in my PC in a bit and see how things go. All I want is to play Diablo 3 damn it! lol If all goes well it'll be awesome OC'ing this RAM. I really like the color/low profile.

looking at your original post, from what i can see you want to put this RAM in your IB build, correct..
just note that IB only supports running RAM in dual channel so you are better of with 2 or 4 sticks...
or if the density of the RAM in chA is the same as chB for example
chA has 2 x 2GB sticks
chB has 1 x 4GB stick
http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/cs-011965.htm
the point being your 3 sticks wont run in triple channel like on your x58 system as said IB / lga1155 systems support only dual channel smile.gif

PS: i tried Maxmem tests awhile back with 3 x 4GB sticks and 4 x 4GB sticks.. the difference in the results was around 20% and running 3 sticks on an lga1155 system i believe that 2 sticks ran in dual channel and 1 in single even tho maxmem reported dual channel

There are 2GiB single sided 30nm DIMMs.

Having half the ranks on a DIMMs doesn't kill bandwidth. It does reduce it slightly because higher levels of interleaving won't work with only one DIMM per channel, but it doesn't "kill" it.
