[Engadget] Verizon's CFO says grandfathered unlimited plans on the way out - Page 3

I wonder if this will affect Sprint users who roam on Verizon's data network.

Regardless, I signed on with Sprint a year ago and have never looked back.

even their current 4g is pretty spotty. Once Sprint starts to massive roll out LTE later this year, that will give them an edge that they badly need despite having a really simple and low cost plans compared to the other carriers.

Seems to me if the phone companies refuse to provide acceptable service the people should revoke their access to land for landlines and their privileges to use the wireless spectrum. Perhaps a public company is in order if the private corps continue to prove obtrusive.

Too bad the corporations are the ones running things. We serfs will just have to accept our masters dictums like good dogs.

I switched to Sprint a year ago. When Sprint starts going with Tier plans, I'm moving back to trac-phone. Having a smartphone is pointless without unlimited data.

Enjoy that sprint. That's my best speed test from all over Washington, Idaho, oregon and california save for 1 speedtest that was at 2 am where I got 1.25mbps

I will never understand why so many customers are against this. The tiered plan is supposed to be beneficial as 99.9% of customers rarely go over the tiered data cap, and it costs less than the unlimited plan. How many of you will use more than 2 GB a month? Heck, how many of you even use more than 500 MB a month?

Last month I used 64.3 MB of data. The tiered plan is great, I save $15 more a month compared to back when I paid for unlimited.

I'm sticking it out with Sprint, screw the rest of the carriers.

I don't see them lifting the unlimited banner anytime soon, because if they do their customers will leave.

What I will say though is Sprint is undergoing a major cell tower revamp right now, with completely updated towers and backbones.

Network Vision is going to change Sprint.

Ever wondered why indoor reception is horrible with sprint? They don't have an 800mhz band. Well they do, but it's for the old iDEN network that Nextel push to talk uses, and that stuff can reach all the way across the texas desert, it's quite amazing.

They're decommissioning that network due to declining popularity, and reassigning the spectrum to CDMA/LTE. They're changing all of their 3g/LTE backbones to Fiber, instead of copper, so the towers are completely modern.

Therefore each tower is going to be able to handle more, WAY more customers than before, and LTE will be available mostly everywhere. They're upgrading a few towers at a time, and they're ahead of schedule if S4GRU is to be believed, and on track to finish upgrading next year.

It's not about that, it's about principal. You charge me $80 a month for wireless, you rake in constant profits, yet you can't reinvest in your towers at all? It's the fact that you keep paying more for less service.

What's to stop them from ratcheting the limit down each year when their networks get more stressed and charging more so they can profit using the same old backend that they've been using for years? It's not fair.

TMobile is on the right track...somewhat. Regardless of their lack of towers, Tmobile lets you buy a phone off contract and pay like $40 max for service. That's pretty decent.

Other carriers that are more capable should offer that.
