Oh yea, that's what i meant. Should have been more clear.

Its broken but you might be able to put the drive in a freezer then try it to get your data off it sometimes it works cant say for sure never done it my self lol iv had drives just clicked and i smacked them and they started working long enugh to get any data i needed off them.

I understand his frustration, especially if he needed the data off it, with no backups. I've been there and done that. As I'm sure some of you may have been in that spot too before.

True, I apologise OP.

Do you just want to get the data back from it? in that case, there are a bunch of companies which let you send in your broken hdd to get your data recovered.

thanks, rma isnt possible, its from a oem external package,

This guy. He deserves a medal.
You asked for help in the OP and stated it couldn't be detected. Nowhere in there does it say "broken" or "doesn't work". We aren't a customer service rep, we can bark back.

As everyone is mentioning, you could try the freezer method. It's a longshot, but it's still worth a try if you have extremely needed data.

If it's broken, you should try hitting it the other way.

Like if it was lying flat and your speaker landed on it (denting it slightly), turn it upside down and smack it really hard against something. (Like a piece of hard wood) Maybe that'll knock something free. biggrin.gif

Or maybe not - probably it'll still be broken. Still, it feels good to give a hard drive a whack every now and then. thumb.gif

If you have irreplaceable data on it, pony up the grand or so it costs to send it away to a professional data recovery service. If not, you can try a bunch of tricks to get it working long enough to pull some data off of it, but the odds of that working are verrrrry slim.

I had a hard drive die and start making those clicking sounds too. I had data on it that, while not irreplaceable, took years to make and collect. I bought an identical model and swapped around internal parts but nothing worked. I learned the hard way and now keep my data backed up on a secondary HDD I keep in my closet and a third backup online.
