L2 (and L3) cache, depending on their size, allow for certain "processes" to stay on chip and not be forced to use system ram, which is inherently slower.

On this note there was chip called something like the pentium pro? Anyway it's in the same time period as the pentium and had 1MB cache. So yeah... cache size is kinda random really.
