Bsod/Flickering after installing Sapphire 7870 OC

Hello

I’ve being having a weird bsod since I installed my new Sapphire 7870 OC.
Sometimes when my monitor turns off due to power plan (I have it set to turn off after 15’ minutes) I press a key or move my mouse to bring it back on and my computer freezes. The keyboard is not responsive and the monitor remains in standby mode (Although it responds to ping over the network). After I manually reset my computer I get the minidump to read the following.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED (117)
The display driver failed to respond in timely fashion.
(This code can never be used for real bugcheck).
Arguments:
Arg1: fffffa800f20e2c0, Optional pointer to internal TDR recovery context (TDR_RECOVERY_CONTEXT).
Arg2: fffff8800463c768, The pointer into responsible device driver module (e.g owner tag).
Arg3: 0000000000000000, The secondary driver specific bucketing key.
Arg4: 0000000000000000, Optional internal context dependent data.

Also after i installed the card i had experienced some weird flickering when watching video. What happens is that my screen flickers for just a second up and down, sometimes happens a lot sometimes not too much. Even better when i downclock the gpu using amd's catalyst control panel it goes away.

I tried booting in safe mode after uninstalling all drivers and run driver sweeper but no good.

I tried the catalyst 12.3 and 12.4 but still happens.

My computer Specs:

CPU: AMD 1090T
M/B: Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5 Rev 2.0 (F6 Bios)
RAM: 4 x2GB Kingston KHX1600C9D3X2K2
GPU: Sapphire Radeon 7870 OC
PSU: Corsair AX750
Monitor: Samsung T260
OS: Windows 7 64bit SP1
OS Drive: Corsair Force 3 120gb

Any ideas?

If you downclock your GPU and the problem goes away you may have gotten a faulty card.

Actually the flickering goes away not the Bsod.
I was thinking rma as well.

I think that is your best bet. Flickering at stock clocks + BSOD is probably a faulty card, but if you have another PC available I would test it in another to be sure before going through an RMA.

If it does it in a different PC then you know it's the card.

I registered to tell you this. I had the same issue as you with the exact same card and a similar Gigabyte mobo. I spent 2 months trying to figure out *** was wrong with my Sapphire 7870 OC. I had blue screens (infrequent), computer would not wake up after monitors turning off (frequent), display driver crashing and screen would get weird black bars (frequent), games completely freezing (somewhat frequent), and corrupted flickering windows especially after display driver crashed (frequent). I got a replacement card from amazon by returning the one that I thought was "faulty." It did not solve the problem. I also tried reformatting my PC, every driver sweeping program, flashing my BIOS, flashing my VBIOS, and tried over driver version they had out there including the beta. RMAing your card will NOT fix the problem. There's something incompatible with the cards energy saving feature and Gigabyte's mobos. I spent about 80 hours debugging this issue. I even saw my energy saving mode's clock speed get stuck at 400mhz and wouldn't go up to the normal clock speed even when I started a game. Also, I had it get stuck at 125mhz (which is the frequency it downclocks to when the monitors turn off).

I am warning you now before you waste a lot of time...return the card and get a 670 GTX. It literally got rid of EVERY single problem I was experiencing and even made it so some of my games ran up to 2x faster. I am 100% certain this is what your issue is. You're welcome! My advice will save you so many hours of headaches!

Well after your advice i will try to test the card to another M/B to make sure there are no problems and if it works ok i will be replacing my motherboard rather spending more money to a card.

Thanks for the response!

Hey guys

Just to let you know after installing Catalyst 12.6 Beta my situation seems pretty stable!
Haven't had any flicker for 12 hours now neither a bsod or driver timout on monitor wake up.

Got to admit i was a bit patient since i can't wait for RMA times. Drivers were my last chance before RMA.

Drivers can be found here.

I have the same problem, like you the screen turns off while i playing or exploring firefox. I have installed Catalyst 12.6 Beta but nothing have changed. I have two Saphire HD 7870 OC linked on crossfire. I have tested separatedly on diferent slots and motherboards http://es.gigabyte.com/products/page/mb/ga-x58a-ud3r_20/overview/ and http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68VGEN3/
Sould I RMA or wait for new drivers? (sorry bout my english biggrin.gif)
