[Einstein@Home] Einstein@Home now supports ATI/AMD Graphics Cards

Quote:
After more than a year of work by Oliver Bock, Bernd Machenschalk, Heinz-Bernd Eggenstein and other developers, we are pleased to announce the release of the first Einstein@Home application for ATI/AMD Graphics Cards.

This OpenCL application, which searches Arecibo data for new radio pulsars, is about a factor of ten faster than the same search running on a typical CPU. The application is currently available for Windows and Linux computers with Radeon HD 5000 or better graphics cards. We hope to have a version for Macintosh (Apple OS X 10.8, Mountain Lion) sometime this summer, but there are still some problems that need to be fixed or worked around.

Volunteers who wish to run this application will need to install version 7.0.27 or later of the BOINC client. Please see this thread for more information, or if you want to ask questions.

Very nice.

I'm glad that more and more BOINC projects are supporting AMD GPUs.

The list is now:

Milkyway@home

POEM@home

Einstein@home

I am testing with 2 WU's running at the same time... it behaves like CUDA version in that it is self limiting 75% max and won't use the GPU 100%... UNLESS you stop ALL cpu activity on other projects... then it sneaks up to 91% or so... LOL! Doesn't matter if it running one or two tasks per GPU...

Einstein always been like this. It also requires one free's up one thread/core per GPU to work well... otherwise it barely even uses it.

FYI, I am still using 12.2 Catalyst... runs Milkyway fine too...

biggrin.gif

Update: Seems to run the same with 2x per GPU as with 3x per GPU... Also, seems to run slightly faster/better % utilization with slower mem clocks... Right now running 850/850 GPU/MEM clocks... tested faster clocks and seems to slow it down slightly... polling issue somehow I suppose. Anyways, works fine!

This is the same way Albert@Home worked when I ran some of those...

GPU utilization:

1 task = 56%
2 tasks = 73%
3 tasks = 89%

It might even run well with 4 tasks per, but that would violate the stated GPU memory requirements on the HD6990... I may test that someday, but clearly for higher end ATI cards, at least two WU's per GPU seems most optimal.

biggrin.gif

Milkyway is running on GPU-0 (top) and 3 Einsteins running on GPU-1. Notice the different GPU utilization specs in each task... tried one, then two, then three using the HOME,WORK,SCHOOL Project Preferences settings of 1, 0.5, 0.33 ...

Update: Tasks completed and so close together even though they were not started at same time that one has to wonder... probably just a coincidence since the first ran solo a while, then the last ran solo a while... so the middle task ran the longest never having run solo. But looks like 7762 seconds (129 minutes or 2.1 hrs) is about what is to be expected. Albert ran on the same card overclocked at about 75-95 minutes, so three tasks done in 129 minutes is a big improvement.

Woopsy, I forgot to check that...

I'll test more tomorrow and let you know... But for Cuda, it's 9 files, 8 of which are 2Meg each per WU on the download... I forget the upload... so have to test again fully for ATI...

Unfortunately it requires the latest BOINC Client (7.x), of which I reverted back to 6.12.34 due to issues I was having.

Does it require double precision support? Don't want to interrupt my "chimping", so I can't find out by myself. Didn't see any relevant info on the E@H forum either.

P.S. Whoooo, my 1000th post! smile.gif

Einstein works on my 9800 GT cards, so DP isn't a problem, but higher level atomic functions are lacking too... still, it runs on 9800GT just fine.

OK, I may know waay to little to be on this team, but I suck at config files and the like. How do I get my HD 7870 and i7 to perform other than just choosing projects supporting my ati card?
