[THG] Diablo 3 Beaten in Just 7 Hours? - Page 40

Let's put it this way Nocturin. Diablo 2 + LOD let's say 3 years of devlopment. It got 11 years worth of play ( and still going ) by thousands among thousands of people. So if Diablo 3 get's anywhere near that much play time by it's followers, then all your numbers mean nothing.

You assume X amount of creation time * Y amount of play time by 1 person. What about the MILLIONS that pre-ordered it, along with the millions that bought on launch day?

Because remember they aren't devloping it for ONE person, they're devloping it for EVERYONE who decides to play. So why should they be left out?

I admit defeat, for now.

muhahahahahahahaha!

*cough*

edit: that was fun boys smile.gif. You guys are just way to verbose for me. I barely have the attention span to type out this sentence. biggrin.giflachen.gif

Thank you three for your replies.

I don't think you could make any other numbers up that go beyond the "assumed excellence" you provided us with earlier.

The only "other" example that has been given thus far in relation to your argument was/is Duke Nukem.

The studio that was making DN was sued because in 2009 3d laid off the entire development team...And was then sued by Take 2 but, settled with prejudice...That prejudice was that 3D's "game" couldn't be scrapped...So Gearbox FINISHED the game.

It is fair to say THAT GAME was in development for a decade because their work from 2000-2005 was actually USED as were Gearbox's tweaks.

You can't say that about Diablo 3.

The game was COMPLETELY deleted over 4 times...Entirely, no music, no sound, no sniffing...Done, gone, by, peace out.

Then new teams were brought in to birth the game.

That's an entirely new development team, new ideas, essentially a new game...The only thing that remained, was the name.

TWICE, Diablo 3 was leaked as a torrent live from former employees...Legal fights that are still taking place to this day...Both of those projects were scrapped entirely.

When you actually look at Diablo 3's history, it has only actually been in development since the last studio and that was 5/6 years ago.

It took them that long to make this game, not longer.

That needs to be acknowledged and accounted for...

Their budget is an entirely different entity because they still spent a tremendous amount of money on those 5 rebirths...So if you want to knock that, have at it...But, don't try to push 10+ years when you know for a fact, the game was created, from scratch, only 5/6 years ago.

o.0?

...ok...

since your not done yet:

I don't want to knock on the dev's money door, so I'm not, but neither of us knows for a fact (as a fact) that the game was created 5/6 years go, nor 12 years ago, nor when it started, nor before or after d2, nor 2 years. If you can find evidence I'd like to see it. Why is the development time considered separately from the development costs? They're two things that are directly tied together: time=money.

It doesn't matter if the game was created in 2 years or 7, it still took millions(!) of man hours to give you the product you are playing (for 40-a bajillion hours). This fact is simply astounding, and I'm sure if you'd stop focusing on the conjecture of my replies you'd see the joviality that I was trying to impart. If the dev team had 300 people, working for 6 years, that would still be more man hours than my original (completely relevant) equation. rolleyes.gif

best reply yet biggrin.gif.

Your right, I didn't consider more than 1 person in my equation. 4 people @ 120hrs a piece would of been better biggrin.gif.
Do we want to mock up some more numbers? Dey iz fun!

Woah, woah, woah, bra.
The details about dev time and everything else that you included in your dissertation does not change the fact that it's still a staggering amount of time that went into creation of "1 hour" of play.
Weather you spend 20 hours on the game and stop, or 500 hours in the game before calling it quits, you still have over 1000 hours of creation time for 1 hour of play time.
That is freaking insane, and it's all I'm commenting on. The numbers only go up if you include the rumors of the dev team size (seem reports of 80-300 people).
I'm talking one very specific metric: creation time vs play time. I'm not bashing the quality of the game, in any way. I'd be crazy to say the quality wasn't top notch and (mostly) polished.
...and yes I wasted prolly 400+ hours into D1 and D2 so I know what they game's about and how it's meant to be played. tongue.gif.
All's I'm saying is that they could of had more in the game, but they didn't for whatever reason(right or wrong), and the dev team had 1000+ hours per one hour of gameplay. It's kinda like an anti-arguement, because it's captain obvious time.
So, therefore, the product's playtime (7-500hrs) vs. creation time (1million+ hours), the game could of been a little more....(still not bashing quality)
( I have not played the game past the open beta, so you have a lot more experience with the depth or breadth of the game play/time than I ever will. Was not impressed during the beta, but that's my opinion)

Uhm... 1 million hours equates to 114 years...

I'm not knocking your math, be it relavent or not, I'm knocking the information that this game took 10+ years to develop...That's a falsehood.

I built the servers for their new "primary" office in 05 and as a DIE-HARD D2 fan, believe me, I'm very intimate with the development of this game.

I do know for a fact when development on the CURRENT game started and it was 5/6 years ago...This is all information (Aside from the legal matters) that you can literally google.

I absolutely agree it took an insane amount of man hours to complete the game.

My sole "beef" with this topic is with those that claim this game was in development for 10 years and failed.

Monetarily, it's a failure right now and will be until they can even cover server costs for the past 10 years...The servers we installed were worth well over 1/2 mil...I absolutely agree that financially this game won't see a net gain for YEARS...I'm absolutely with you.

However, developmentally this game is a success considering it's past...Think about how often they hit the delete key and the sheer fact they canned 2/3 studios...It's a miracle they pulled it off in this little time.

In 2006, most of the D3 team was actually HIRED...In 2007, for the first time, they actually admitted it was in development...and in 2008, they actually hired the lead 3-d level designer for D3 (This is heavily documented)...I could keep going, very easily...

You people need it google it and LEARN SOMETHING, you'd actually be surprised.

Im wondering if people really understand just how hard it is to program a game as well. especially from scratch. I remember in my computer science class many years ago writing like half a page of code just to say "hello world" ... i had 9 pages of code for other programs that would do something simple like print out a random card. Something we take for granted. Now imagin having to add motion to 3d figures with no Frame rate issues, keep track of hundreds of thousands of different weapons, placing random objects and in a decently big world. Put all those little fun animations that make the game cooler and lots of explosion physics and im sure you got more code than i can imagine. Thats just the rough core of the project. Then they still have to fix all those little bugs and glitches that everyone always likes to complain about. Can you imagine having to find that one line of code up on thousands that causes that glitch and then trying to fix it. yes sometimes it is an easy fix, but other times fixing one problem will just create another. Even though D3 STILL has created an awesome game, still, people should have a little more consideration into the process of making a game and stop being so ungrateful. 4 scraps and they still went on trying to create the game, from nothing! They finally Got a great product out that many of us have been waitin many many years for, and it is exactly what the true fans were expecting. With the auction house, creating your own weapons and gems, acheivements and the challenge of hardcore, i think this game will have hundreds of hours of gameplay from many players.
And blizzard knows how to make a really good dungeon crawler. Anyone ever play hunted the demon forge for xbox360??? probably not cuz it sux! Dungeons are a little longer than that of diablo...but they are borrrrring. I played all four acts on normal, and im on act 3 on nightmare and im still not bored. takes a very special game to do that, and for that I am grateful. Blizzard are no fools. They have been in the business a long time, so i'm sure that whatever decisions they went with and did were for the right reasons. I complained about their skill tree system, but now that i have had the chance to play with it, i love it. Its probably not the best example, but my point is that i trust that blizzard knows what they are doing when it comes to making a game like this, and im sure that whatever they did whether its always online play or an 8 hour campaign, they did it for a reason.
ps. i really dont think people will be passing nightmare/hell/inferno in 7 hours time, especially in a party. HUGE difference in monsters from normal -> nightmare. Hope the trend continues.

When they are counted sequentially here, yes they are.

We're talking about manned hours (as in 40h/1w x 300, or 300 people working 40 hours a week), not sequential hours.

I'll reply after I get home Masked smile.gif. (I promise, just gotta get some work done wink.gif).

.

soooo...1/2 mil server project and they still had that crash on launch day? Even though im over that already, im still curious as to why or how the servers still crashed on that day? was it really the heavy volume of people or were there other reasons?
also what kinda character do you have now in d3?
