Server RAM Question

Hey guys,

I have purchased 16GB DDR2 PC5300 RAM for a server build. The odd thing is though, upon putting the RAM in, it only detects 12GB which means two of the 2GB Modules are not detected. Upon looking at the RAM, Each stick has a code and then A or B at the end of the matching codes. Does that mean I need to put Modules labelled A in the same coloured RAM slots or Module A and Module B in the same coloured slot. So for Example :

White Slot 1 : 2GB Module A
White slot 2 2GB:Module B

Or

White slot 1: 2GB Module A
White slot : 2GB Module A

All Modules are working and tested what else is strange though is if my motherboard detects 12 and I remove another 4GB ( 2 modules) then it states there is only 4GB when there ought to be 8GB.

Not only that but rather than running at 667Mhz its down clocked to 400Mhz, I assume this could also relate to the ranking ? Infact I am guessing it all relates mostly to ranking order tongue.gif

Look forward to some help.

I'd try to put the Module A stick in the same-colored slots but that's just a force of habit when installing RAM for me. Also, are you using ECC Registered sticks or just regular sticks? I'm pretty sure that if you use a server board but not actual server memory that the memory is limited some but I'm not sure.

What motherboard are you using, and what is the specific part number of the memory?

I've run into situations where you run out of RAM ranks in a server. IE - each CPU can only manage 8 ranks of RAM. If you have 3 pieces of quad-rank memory per CPU, you'll have a total of 12 ranks of RAM and one DIMM won't be seen.

Thanks guys. sorry for the late reply. Yes it is Server ECC Ram and the board I am using is a Tyan S2915 smile.gif 2 CPU sockets with 4 RAM Slot to each CPU Socket.

Ah that makes sense with the Rankings and what a CPU is capable of handling though I would be surprised if that is an issue here is my board is capable of taking 32GB of Ram, so one would assume its capable enough.

I have actually sent the RAM back as I believe two of the modules were in the end not showing as faulty..but just not showing at all as I took all the modules out and put the two in that I thought could be the issue and alas, the motherboard did not see them .

Thanks so much for the info guys.
