correct me if i'm wrong on some of the lower-tier cards, but it's really more like this:

5900 -> 6990 -> 7990?
5800 -> 6900 -> 7900
5700 -> 6800 -> 7800
5600/5500 -> 6700 -> 7700
5400 -> 6600/6500 -> 7600/7500
4300 -> nothing -> 6400 -> 7400

As another poster mentioned, this is similar to the 5870 vs 6870... debacle, if you want to call it that.

this is almost exactly right (5600/5500 =/= 6700), but it's AMD's fault for screwing the lineup by both turning 5800 into 6900 and reusing the 5770 again with a new name. they effectively added a naming tier, without adding a whole new performance tier.

Seems pretty interesting, GTX580 level performance for around 260$.

Yeah as pointed out the 6770 is a renamed 5770 so the marketing scheme was more of marketing thing for cashing in on guys who were still used to previous naming scheme. You can even flash the 5770 into a 6770, which I have done, so only difference between the cards is BIOS (5770 will get even HDMI 1.4a, if you flash it with 6770 BIOS).

Fortunately this time around 7770 is not a rebrand at least and once the price drops some more it will sit on the market where it should. That is when nVidia eventually manages to release their corresponding offerings.

I think that review is faulty. Hardwareheaven shows the card LESS powerful than a gtx 560. I trust hardwareheaven more than a website no one has ever heard of.

The other graph doesn't even show the settings it was run at, if it was a cpu bottleneck because of a low resolution, then 1 fps is well within the margin of error.

It must have been rather low resolution as otherwise the only 128 bit memory bus would have castrated the results. Assuming it was a real result and not something they just made up (which they just might have done). Unless the game is specifically not suitable for nVidia card for some reason which I also doubt. The 670 should be and is a lot more powerful than the 7770.

In combination of how they represented the graph (the ~1.2% difference is presented visually as ~3x the difference) I would say the first "benchmark" site is in my book on the same page as "independent Swiss research institute" trying to sell me washing powder in TV commercials.

They do seem to be trying to put somekind of spin to that specific result ofc by saying:
Quote:
We didn’t expect to see any surprises when testing this card in game and for the most part we didn’t. But due to a refined driver we saw big jumps over the other HD 7770’s in Crysis 2 DX9. The same goes for F1 2011 even though we don’t have any other results to compare to other then our GTX 670, but our results showed the HD 7770 coming in right with the GTX 670 in F1 2011, It’s unclear if this is the result of a large AMD bias or more likely ineffective drivers from Nvidia with the game. Beyond those two issues we saw the same pairing of the three HD 7770’s together on all of our other in game results.

Rest of their results are more inline with reality, so on second glance perhaps this one is just a slip, not deliberate. Still does not show a "benchmark" or "review" site in good light if you let that kind of "bias" to slip through. When I look at benchmark or review sites I expect neutral representation of the data, any specific notes or impressions the reviewer wants to share with me and after that I am perfectly capable of making up my own mind wink.gif
