Sata VS Sata 2 VS Sata 3

Thread Starter
What is the difference between these drives other than performance and are any of those drives compatible with the other?
Any drive will work in any of those but they will only work at their rated speed if plugged into the correct port.

Example sata 3 drives will only run at sata3 speeds if its a sata3 drive in a sata3 port but it will work at sata/2 speeds if it is plugged into those ports.

Also sata3 is only useful for an ssd, an hdd will never hit speeds fast enough to saturate sata2 so it's pointless.

The SATA series of adapters are a new type of connection between the hard drive and Motherboard drasticly improving transfer rate and a far better multitasking rate the higher the series. The difference between the I, II, and III is speed (Transfer rate). Series I have a transfer rate of 1.5 GB/s(BUT only in short burst with a typical rate of 1.2 GB/s, series II a rate of 3 GB/s and finally series III a transfer rate of 6 GB/s. Anyone else is free to correct me, the numbers are being pulled off SATA's websits. Good place for info on their products and what they're capable of.

basically its only performance, you can hook up a sata 3 ssd to a sata 1 port, but you will only get the max speed of your sata 1 port and not the speed of your sata 3 ssd.

Remeber the slowest point in your machine will hinder your other parts speed.

Never say never. One or two more platter density bumps will get them there. There's already drives peaking at 220MB/sec. wink.gif
