Windows XP Setup and smss.exe

Thread Starter
Ok i'm trying to do a fresh install of windows xp pro on my existing version. I'm doing this by puting the windows xp disc in and starting the setup on the desktop ( I was wanting to do it this way because, I didnt really want to reformat the hard drive and start like that)

Ok it then starts copying the files. Ok the first problem is that when it is copying the files I get a error message saying " file not found smss.exe " it then gives the choice to either retry or skip the file, ok if I retry it just trys again and then gives the error message again.

If I skip the file it will finish the copy and then restart the computer to then install windows in the dos mode. Ok the next problem is that when it restarts and goes into dos mode it starts the blue windows install screen and then loads a few various files ( it loads them too fast for me to see, but this is a routine process anyways, no big deal )

Ok then it should start installing windows and go through the various partitioning options and format choices. But thats when I get the next problem, a blue screen pops up and says "SESSION 3_INITIALIZATION_ERROR" with the error code 0x6F00000000, it then recommends to remove and new hardware that has been added ( I havent added any new hardware so it isnt that)

Ok I did some searching and found on one of microsoft's help page that the error code 0x6F is caused by the missing file "smss.exe"

Does anyone know how to solve this problem or anything I should or could be doing. Or some way to install windows differently? Should I format the hard drive and try installing with a clean formatted hard drive?

Well without the File smss.exe this can cause system instability most likely why you can completely install Windows mate.

I would try and Install Windows through system boot.

GO into your sysem BIOS and go to your Device Boot directory and make your DVD/CDROM drive the 1st Boot device.

Now insert the XP install CD and SAVE AND EXIT THE BIOS.

Now follow the onscreen instructions.

Its also possible your XP disk has a scratch in a bad place. Try borrowing a friends or something.

Just so you know, you can install windows without reformatting when you boot off the disk, and i would say this is preferred over installing over windows from windows.

Well a repair install such as installing over the same Windows parition as you have now may serve to be better.
