[CNN]Comcast moving towards a usage based billing - Page 8

You know. It is very simple. I'm repeating myself now, but will continue to do so. Things COST money. If you don't want to spend the money or don't like the price or the conditions of the product or service; or you simply don't like the company. Don't Buy!!! It's that simple!!

For example. I make a good living. I could easily afford smart phones with all the data plans and all that. But guess what. No. I don't need to spend $160+ a month for it for my wife and I. It's far too much money to spend a month to feed my narcissistic need to update my facebook or other BS. I've got a pre-paid Verizon phone. I get 1000 minutes for $100 that last for one year.. Those minutes generally last me between 9-12 months. I use a cell phone how it was meant to be used, at least in my mind; I have a flat, call a tow, hangup....... I need some milk, pick it up on the way home, hangup........I'm on my way, hangup.....etc.

I don't like cell companies. I refuse to pay them $2000 a year for services most people largely don't need except to feed their narcissism. I did the same thing with the cable/sat companies for 3 years, paying 100+ a month to watch maybe 10 channels, if that. It's BS! But the companies can charge what they like. They have a business to run. Just not with my money.

So again, if you're really pissed at Comcast, put your money where your mouth is and cut the cord. Don't go crying for someone to come in and rein these 'evil, greedy' corporations in. Cause when you do...that IS the beginning of the ....'ISMS' I hate so much. Excercise your own power. Don't ask someone else to do it for you.

There are terabit backbones that run across the length of the states. Thousands of miles of fiber. All of that has to be paid for somehow... Thousands of miles of fiber is not free, nor is it cheap.

That's part of why I said Verizon and Comcast need to be broken up into smaller separate entities. Smaller local ISPs competing within single states rather than two or three national duopolies could still effect significant price drops and more importantly, speed increases. The US has what, 311 million people? The business is there, the trouble is they're perfectly content to continue charging customers $80/mo. for 30mb/s cable over copper (cough, Cox, cough).

"Voting with your wallet" is a waste of time and doesn't work. The problem is, Cox, Comcast and Verizon all have monopolies on "high-speed" broadband in their respective markets. If you "cut the cord", there's nobody else in the area offering comparative service, so it's either back to third-world dial-up or nothing at all. Sorry, but no.

The sad thing is, you're completely and utterly serious. Oh the lols.

I agree with you, but the entire argument is nullified by asking a simple question: Where are the alternatives? If you have a choice of 3 ISPs, and they all use the same pricing and packages, what can you do? Dial-up? I'm fortunate that we have some alternatives in my area, but it's often the case that some cities only have one option for broadband internet (for whatever the reason--geographical, etc.). Doesn't leave you (m)any options in that case.

At least for cell phones, we've seen the trickling-down of smaller (though albeit crappier) providers--I myself am disgusted with how much cell phone plans cost with the big players, so I opted for Virgin Mobile. They don't have as extensive coverage as AT&T or Verizon (since they're on a sub-net of the Sprint network), but thankfully it works for me, and I can get by on only $25/mo while even having a smartphone. Those analogous options don't exist yet for broadband ISPs.

This is all a short-sighted response to re-coup money that they are losing by the truckload from people that are ditching cable service and doing all their tv watching via hulu, netflix, prime, and torrents.

Here is the way I look at it. Brighthouse is charging me 75 dollars a month for the hd cable package, and 50 for my internet. I watch maybe 10 channels at the most. Most smart consumers are looking at their bill and saying "hmm, is it really worth 75 dollars a month for 5-10 channels that I watch?". So the short-sighted cable companies decide that the only way to plug the whole of leaking subscribers is to up-charge the internet usage and recoup some of the money there.

If they were *truly* smart and forward thinking, they would start REDUCING the prices of their cable packages to make it more appealing for subscribers to stay. That, or introduce pay for what channels you want a la cart. What's to end up happening is that they are going to try and force parity by continually increasing the data prices until it matches the lost income from canceled cable subscribers. It's not going to work. They would need to increase data prices by 2-300 % a year.

I think it's funny how, not only are most Americans completely accustomed to being ripped off, fleeced, shafted and nickle-and-dimed, they actually beg for it. Bend over for Wall Street, it's the American way. laugher.gif

But lowering prices is socialism!

Spoken like a true socialist.

...and it's FORCED price lowerering by a government agency.

What's the line between reasonable profits for a corp and greedy? What's too much pay for a CEO and what is too little. What is reasonable? Who set's that line? Is it the market or is it bureacrats at a government agency? That's the point.

Regulations introduced to curb anti-competitive practices and thus foster competition isn't "forced price lowerering." A free market is a regulated market. Without regulations, megacorps grow large, dominate the market and push out any and all competition.

I'm all for private enterprise, you just can't have a Wild-West with no oversight or people and their greed will run amok. We have police to maintain order in our day to day lives, why have anarchy in the market?

But your point is well taken. I will admit that utilities, in general, are unique in that there are a limited number of providers and SOME regulation may be necessary.

So I can see where you're coming from there.

I just hate the idea that making money, lots of it even, is evil and greedy. Like I've said before, the middle class is employeed by and heavily invested in these so called 'greedy corporations' with their 401k's. It's crying crocodile tears to me when I hear that 'evil, greedy corp' shout.

Let's have a bunch of broken up, smaller companies where a glass and tea cup cost $20 a piece? You see what I'm saying? There is a place for these 'evil' corps.
