HOUSTON — (May 17, 2012) — Researchers have unveiled an “inexact” computer chip that challenges the industry’s 50-year pursuit of accuracy. The design improves power and resource efficiency by allowing for occasional errors. Prototypes unveiled this week at the ACM International Conference on Computing Frontiers in Cagliari, Italy, are at least 15 times more efficient than today’s technology.

The contrary of that is that they will have built in checks outside of the chip to ensure "accuracy" However, the sum of those parts will use less energy than a fully fledged "exact" chip.

Sounds more like we are going backwards, but i understand how this could work.
Its odd how a chip is 'better' when it makes errors.

Well, if you take it this way, it makes sense: I can make my exam in 30 minutes, have tons of errors and not put a lot of effort into it or take the full 75 minutes, work a lot harder and get a good mark.

Interesting concept. Determining stability while overclocking inexact chips would be an interesting endeavor. At what frequency of errors would one deem the chip unstable?

Fixed, these chips are not only 15 times faster, but also up to 15 times more power efficient.

If you think this its a step backwards, you are ignorant and sadly mistaken. For example (from the article), this chip can be used to process images at a much higher rate than is currently possible, as the margin of error is acceptable for producing discernable images.
