Probably when the error correction starts taking more time than it would to get the proper result at a slower clock speed.

I've heard about something like this in reference to a chip designed for a hearing aid. It can be made lighter and smaller and the idea is that the user learns to adjust to whatever processing errors crop up. Depending on how many errors it makes and how pronounced they are people may prefer the smaller and lighter hearing aid.

Think of them as overclocked chips. You overclock them, and they lose stability and start to make errors.

Not to mention, with the efficiency of these chips, why not run them in a dual processor setting where the inexact calculations are checked by the second processor. It should offer the redundancy to make things almost 100% accurate again, but with unbelievable speed and power savings.

They say they're making tablet like devices that run on solar panels, similar to a solar powered calculator. My first thought is: Solar powered E-reader. Those things already have minimal power requirements, and they mostly just produce images, Amazon should be jumping all over this.
