Would a 955 bottleneck a 680? - Page 5

Andrews, your 550Ti isn't getting bottlenecked by your Phenom II 955 in the games you've meantioned, hence the %100 gpu usage you're talking about.

it also depend on games, crysis 1,2 and gta4 uses 100% of my gtx460, but games using unreal engine 3 like bulletstorm uses like 70%, other games even less

So then what is happening when my GPU usage is at 100% all the time and my CPU usage rarely goes above 90%?

Besides I was giving that as an example that different programs require different amounts of resources.

What's happening is your GPU is being fully utilized while your CPU still has some head room.

LMAO. Anyways...

OP, overclock that CPU to 4.0GHz+ and you'll see quite a bit of improvement. That 570 was a decent choice, and definitely won't be bottlenecked at 4.0GHz and 1080p.

To everyone else, you're always going to have a limiting factor in your PCs, no matter if it's the CPU, GPU, RAM, etc. There is no built that perfectly utilizes all hardware so there is no bottleneck. The point is that if there is a bottleneck - which there always will be - your system still keeps up to the performance required for you to have fluid gameplay. Is the 680 going to be bottlenecked by a 955? Probably. Will it still allow you to play at the desired settings with an enjoyable amount of FPS? Most definitely; however, a 670 would've been a better choice for that system, unless you're upgrading your CPU later.

Would do much better on an AM3 board with a better chipset. Probably your biggest bottleneck tbh. The 470, is a pretty good match for the 955BE

Same with OP, the CPU is fine, but the MOBO is gonna hold you back, especially if you want to OC. Definately keep an eye out for a cheap AM3+ motherboard with
a 990FX chipset. You can usually find them with a MIR or instant savings for less than $100. The Gigabyte 990FX ud3 is a decent choice.

I do hope your 570 works really well for you though.

exactly that's why I have it. an overclock edgtx470 and 955 BE . it's not perfect and bottlenecks some of my games that are poorly threaded and very cpu extensive but still it gives respectable performance and maxes out most of my games. not bad for a htpc but I do feel if I get a better cpu like an i3 2100 I would get better performance.

my mobo isn't holding me back at all. I've tested am2+ vs. am3 setups before and they're pretty much on-par if all you do is game. even going from a slow speed ddr2 to ddr3 wouldn't affect FPS at all.

to answer the question again this is not even a question to think about. the gtx 680 would get bottlenecked so much it's not even funny. like what he said, the farthest I would get is the gtx 570 or maybe even a HD7850. getting a card much higher end than that will only be a waste.

sorry i know this thread is a few weeks old but i had to weigh in and say that i have 955 be at 3.8 and a msi hd 7970 and there doesnt appear to be any bottleneck. both saints row 3 and battlefield 3 use about 70-75% cpu and 100% gpu maxed settings at 1920x1200

Do you even know what you're looking for when it comes to deciding if you're bottlenecked or not?

Load up a game and play it, if your GPU drops below 99% during action scenes then its bottlenecked.
