Need help with RAM timings (CMT6GX3M3A2000C8)

Hi.

I had some issues with my PC resulting in a CMOS reset and I can't remember how to set up my RAM timings as they were.

MB: ASUS P6X58D-E
CPU: INTEL i7 950 3,06 GHz
RAM : CORSAIR 6GB DDR3 INTEL I7 DOMINATOR GT 2000MHZ CL8 (CMT6GX3M3A2000C8)

Initially the RAM speed is 1066 MHz but as my RAM is able to go faster I thought I could change some values in BIOS to make them go faster. Ufortunately my PC doesn't seem very stable when I try and fiddle with the BIOS settings. So I need help.

From what I've learned the supported speed is 1066 MHz hence the default value I guess so when I change the values it's considered overclocking (one of my ASUS programs tells me that).

I tried entering the BIOS sections "DRAM Timing Control" and enter:
DRAM CAS# Latency: 8
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay: 9
DRAM RAS# PRE Time: 8
DRAM RAS# ACT Time: 24

Everything else is on AUTO - but nothing changed - perhaps because the Ai Overclock Tuner is on AUTO aswell.
Both my board and my RAM supports X.M.P. so I tried the X.M.P. profile: X.M.P. Profile Info: 2000MHz-8-9-8-24-2N-1.65V-1.25V
My PC fails the memtest after about 2 loops (1½ hours) - one time leading to a corrupt BIOS. And Prime95 crashes almost instantly.

I then tried lowering the BCLK value so my CPU reached a more accurate frequency and memtest was stable after this but Prime95 still crashes - just not at once.

I then heard that setting the Ai Overclock Tuner to MANUAL is better than the X.M.P. profile even if the values are the same. I tried this but the Prime95 stille crashes .. well it frooze my Windows.

I'm hoping someone can help me - perhaps if you have a similar system (se hardware in the top).

DDR3-2000 is going to be very difficult to stabilize on an i7 950.

The Bloomfield IMC requires that you run your uncore clock at a minimum of double the DDR rating of the memory if you are using tri-channel mode. Most Bloomfields do not react well to a 4GHz uncore clock, at least not without very good cooling and massive (often unsafe) QPI/VTT voltage. Even the lower speed you are attempting (3.83Ghz uncore and DDR3-1914) are probably pushing it.

XMP is also hit or miss, and you are right to be using manual timings.

One more issue is that, in general, Bloomfieds don't OC well on even CPU multipliers. I''d recommend using 23x or 21x, rather than 22.

I guess I didn't research well enough when I bought my parts. I am using tri-channel mode.
I have a CM Startrooper case so the overall cooling should be okay but the CPU and RAM coolers are stock I believe it's called smile.gif

It appears the default CPU Multiplier is actually 23 (but can go to 24).

Do you have any suggestions where I might find a stable state between 1066 and 2000 MHz? Trial an error perhaps?

1600 should be easy to hit but at lower speeds you can usually have better timings. My GSKILL tri-channel kit had a stick go bad, probably some time ago, because I ran it at 1333/8-8-8-24 for a bit with no problems. It ran at 1600 for just under two years.

If you can't get it stable above 1333 try default, stable settings and memtest each stick. If one stick can be isolated as defective you'll be able to assume RAM is causing the issue with a fair amount of certainty. Then, just RMA the kit imo.

I would be content in a way to run at 1600 MHz - it's better than default.
I guess I'll have to try out some varians. The default works. I havn't had any fails on MemTest or Prime95. Although I only ran MemTest for about 1½ hours, maybe more and Prime95 for a few minutes.

Perhaps I shoudl aim for 1600 and then let Prime95 do an overnight test if it seems stable.
