sony is all about marketing, dont get me wrong they make good stuff too but its mostly marketing.

for instance the a55 can shoot 10fps, but only in jpg mode and with the af and aperture locked. HDR, sweep panoramic and 3d are all nice features but you are once again stuck on jpg mode (which makes sense since they are all compositions of many images) but it does not give you the freedom as taking them all in raw then post processing (not 100% if you can post process 3d shots).

there really isnt anything ground breaking from sony. they have SLT technology which they can push and create something completely revolutionary but they are taking evolutionary steps with it. the only saving grace is the IBIS which is something they dont even mention in their ads.

then we get to the problem they have with their fullframe/pro models. the a900 was introduced 2 maybe 3 years ago. ive seen 2 pro lenses released, the 24/2 zeiss and 500/4G, there has been no new fullframe/pro models mentioned (a850 doesnt count since its teh same as the a900) and they just released the a77 which replaced the a700 form 4 years ago. now count how many lower end bodies they have made.....a230, a330, a350, a500,a550,560,a33.a35.a37,a55,a57 and i am problem still missing some....

lets look at the difference between the models
a230/a330 share the same sensor just 1 has LV the other doesnt
a350/a500 share the same sensor but a500 is slightly bigger
a550/a560/a33 all share teh same sensor, a33 is a SLT
a35/a55/a57 all share teh same sensor just a different bodies

do you see what im trying to get at? they spend all their time on 3-4 low end models which are just rehashes of last years models instead of a clear upgrade path. before the a67/a77 launch the upgrade path was from the a2xx/3xx to the a5xx then to the a900.

So, all the benefits of a fixed mirror are marketing tricks? Show me another $500 DSLR that can shoot @ 7fps and has continuous AF. I won't hold my breath.

7fps is nice, but the AF system really isnt there. whats the AF system on the a33? single 2.8 cross in the center of the frame?

look at the other 7fps cameras on the market (7d, and d7000), yes they significantly are more expensive, but they have a robust AF system which sony does not.

Which is why I specifically mention entry level cameras. The AF on the Sony blows everything out of the water there.

Shallow buffer and largely outdated PDAF sensor means that yes, it truly is a marketing trick.

How is it a marketing trick if it works?

and who cares about the buffer? Anyone that is looking for an entry level DSLR probably doesn't need to take 35 pictures at a time... It's not about that, it's about how fast it takes the pictures. Whenever I'm shooting my kids, I set the drive mode to continuous and turn on the AF and let it do it's thing.

those shots are just ok and honestly too small to see any detail or quality in them. 100% sure my 7D would take a much better shot no trouble and in 15 beautiful RAW files or like 40 something jpgs. buffer is crucial if you are shooting high speed continuous because without a camera with a nice buffer you will no doubt miss that shot that you are "letting the camera fly and do its thing" while i dont use my 8fps hardly at all because i have good timing when i do need it i know it wont fail on me like your camera would
