Again, don't attack me, I do plenty of things just to say I did.. I'm just wondering if there is some other underlying driving force to do things like gimp an 8120 down to a single module just to hit some world records - when in reality the CPU (at least in this case) isn't really technically any faster than it is stock. I overclock for the purpose of saving money I don't have and ending up with faster components for less money.. but obviously the purpose here is not to be prudent, careful, or to save money - in fact it doesn't even seem about winning in BM scores because I'm not sure what this would score well on aside from a single thread run of Cinebench or something.
I said it twice and I'll say it again - I'm not putting anything or anyone down or trying to belittle a pretty interesting hobby that we all share, on some level.. just wondering why you do it to such extremes, when these sort of clocks are completely unusable from any sort of workload standpoint, right?
Anyway, mother of god @ 8+GHz

It is our hobby, like fishing, racing cars, playing baseball, etc.. Why do people do any of these things! I am sure that you have habits or hobbies that a lot of people could care less about but they are important to you.

It has its merit in competition. Tens of Thousands of people compete in overclocking. We compete to be the best. That might not matter to you but to ten's of thousands of people, it does!

In reality no one needs computers, cell phones, or much any technology. Just Food, water, clothing, and some sort of protection from the elements.

Just to say they did, and the fun factor. It's a hobby. It might seem very expensive and requires much effort, but so do a lot of other hobbies. I bet, for example, golf can't be that much cheaper than this. And golf is boring. tongue.gif

Well, it's my hobby too.. I'm on OC.net, right? Like I said it's not that I'm not interested, in fact I called it interesting.. I was just wondering if there were any reasons for it aside from the obvious ones already stated.

Being the best doesn't matter to me one bit, no.. but I'm not putting you guys down for aspiring to - as I said earlier.. If I had money to burn I would certainly be doing the same things you guys are and sharing a beer at the bar after an 8GHz overclock for sure though - It wouldn't have anything to do with being the best it would be just because it was fun to do so, I can care less about status though.

So yeah, thanks for the input.. The reason is, because you can. If I could afford to and actually knew some people IRL who where into OCing or at least knew SOMETHING about computers, then I would OC for jollies instead of for purpose. For now, I just OC every last MHz I can safely get out of a 24/7 OC because I can't replace burnt up mobos and cpus very easily.

I'm not sure what's so offensive about what I'm saying but clearly you are taking it that way.

7ghz on 8 cores is just as practical and useful as 8ghz on 2 cores. It seems like you are just finding a good way to put down someones accomplishment because it's not interesting to you. However, something that is equally as useless would be interesting to you
