Asus xonar phoebus.. Is it good ?? - Page 4

Sorry for the double post but I just realized that I should have mentioned the set up instructions provided by Asus are equally as useless. It is critical that your speaker setup in Windows and also in the driver are done correctly for your system or the results will not be good. Start with the Unified drivers and then set your speakers within windows to 5.1 regardless. In the Driver set the input to 6 speaker. Output for headphone should be set to Dolby Headphone. For speakers you would use whatever your setup for output. Until I set it up that way game sounds (and most movies) just did not make sense.

Why would there be soundcards specifically oriented for gaming ?

From my point of view a good soundcard is a good soundcard no matter what you use it for.

Do you install the Uni drivers over the stock ASUS drivers? I'm planning on installing the low DPC latency version.

You uninstall the original one first.

Nope, from what I read, the Recon3D is quite good. And even if it sucks compared to the Phoebus, I'd rather have something that actually works..

As i see that some of You owne the card i have few questions. First of all i am thinking of buying it but not now as i see there area a lot of issues so id rather let them sort them out before i buy it. MY questions are :
1. Do one need to change audio channels to get stereo upmixing like in D2X ? - for example im playing youtube video which only has 2 channels sound and i want to play it on all of my 6 speakers. On D2X which i own You need to manuall swithc channels to 2 to achieve this effect.

2. Does this card support SPDIF through digital RCA chinch (coaxial) connector ?

3. How this card performs in matter of playing things through SPDIF cable and upmixing 2 channel to 5.1 ?

4.As far as i read it seems the driver sucks like in older xonar - for my D2X i am using Uni XONAR driver - http://brainbit.wordpress.com/2010/07/19/asus-xonar-unified-drivers/

5. How does this gadget with built in mic and headphone connectors work ? Are there any issues ? Some guy wrote that it crackles and that it sucks...

6. Does this card have front panel connector to case mic and headphone connector built into the PCB? ?

Thank You for the asnwers in advance : )

The drivers for the Phoebus are terrible. Lots of issues with a good portion of games out there. When it works it works well enough and music wise it's about on par with an STX, but not really worth the price. The amp is still the same crappy amp on the STX.

The Recon3D is pretty poo. It did well enough for positioning, but in terms of music SQ..was not a brilliant piece of equipment.

I have the phoebus and I am testing it right now. I am not a user, i'm a hardware reviewer and as such I will try to be more detailed in my examination.

The card came directly from ASUS Argentina and so far I have mixed results. For music, well, the card is outstanding, but as soon as I started my recent downloaded digital copy of Borderlands 2 for review (i was thinking on using the card while I was writing the review of Borderlands 2) I nice BSOD came out.

mad.gif

Shocked by this, since it was my first BSOD EVER on my PC (I have an X-Fi Titanium on this pc) I tried another game, Medal of Honor Limited Edition, nice playing for like 20 minutes and BANG, sound distorted and then sound repeating forever, screen froozed and had to manually reset the PC because it completely destroyed windows.

I am still shocked, that a product like this could produce such a huge problem on two games so I inmediatly loaded battlefield 3, to my dispair it frooze on me on the first 10 minutes.

Toke the card out, thinking something was very wrong on my up-until-now-rock-solid core i7 with GTX570 SLI with a Gigabyte Assasin motherboard, put the X-Fi back in and so far, 2 hours of Borderlands 2, no BSOD at all, battlefield 3 runs like always, no freezes, no more sound repeating.

There is something definetly wrong on the drivers. No soundcard driver should ever freeze a Windows 7 PC, specially for the fact the microsoft explicitly disabled hardware acceleration and forced everyone to pass on audio to windows to try and finish off this kinds of problems, the same architecture of Windows 7 kernel should avoid this kinds of issues, so, ASUS is doing something wrong with the drivers.

Will try the latest beta drivers and report back to you guys if you want, I hope it's fixed in the last one, i do not want to say bad things about a product as expensive and premium as this, but, I do not like this kinds of bugs either.
