Help needed on fixing wireless router.

Well my brother came home from the guards today, and went to plug in his wirless NetGear router. So he plugged it in and went to see if it still worked (as he let a buddy borrow it for a few months while he was in iraq). Evidently he friend put a network key or something on it, and he can't get it. As of now he can't contact his buddy for a few weeks.

So, is there any way we can reset the router or something so he can get on?

Also, the router works and everything is dandy he gets a signal and all, but he can't get on the internet because he needs a network key. I told him there is a way to reset it, but I wasn't sure how..thats why I am asking you guys.

I have no experience whatsoever with NetGear routers, but with Linksys and D-Link routers there is usually a small pin-hole located somewhere on the router. The back would be the first place I'd check.

Stick a needle or something fine enough to fit in to it and press the button, holding it down for around 30 seconds - it should only need 15 seconds, but 30 to be safe.

Oh lol that helps. i tried resetting it before but I only presses it once for like 1 second. So now it is reset, but it the computer isn't picking up any wireless networks in range. Are we supposed to do something else or is it just not working?

Type 192.168.0.1 in to your web browser to access the router settings. The password should either be non-existant, "password", "admin", or something generic along those lines.

In the router options you should find a set-up wizard that'll allow you to configure your wireless connection(s). It may be a wizard for your complete wired and wireless connections, or a wireless one seperately. Check 'em all. It doesn't hurt.

Canadagrade has the right idea. You do need to setup the router; however, he missed one thing.
- Make sure you plug directly into the router with an ethernet cable. It shouldn't matter which port, but Netgear recommends the first one.

A way to tell if this is the right IP, AND to see if the router is still functioning is to go to Start > Run > type cmd and hit enter. In the command prompt type ipconfig /all and hit enter. Look for you IP, and the gateway IP. If your IP has a 192.168.X.X number, then your router appears to be working fine. Now look for the Default Gateway. This is the number you put into your browser.

The username is always admin, but I forgot what the default password was. It should either be password or admin

OK after I get into 192.168.....what do I need to do? Is there something i should look for? Shouldn't his lappy pick up the wirless connection automaticall, and say that a wirless connection is near?

On rare occasions, it's not default for the router to broadcast the SSID. You may have to go through the setup on the router, then manually setup the information on the "lappy" It may be his laptop that is having problems. Set up everything possible on the router first though.

Wait...what is "Setup on the router"? How would one go about doing that?

EDIT: Another thing, does it make a difference that the wireless router doesn't have the check mark light up?

EDIT2: Well I went to troubleshoot the manual, and it says that if the wireless network LED is not light, then...well idk...here is what it says:

Is any of that going to help me?

If the wireless light is not on... I'm pretty sure you just need to set it up by going to the router IP which we talked about earlier. The Check mark on the router only lights up for a couple seconds as it boots up. I attached a pic of my wireless basic settings (some edited of course). This is where you are going correct??
