i3 (cheap) or i5

Thread Starter
Here is my situation (bulletpointed for your pleasure)
  • My first build of anything in my life thumb.gif
  • Done quite some research typer.gif
  • Picked out the i3 and HD 7850 but people say bottlenecking issues
  • I say "i cant afford an i5 AND 7850" but they persist saying "they just dont go together"
  • I say "please leave me alone, i cant stand this much weight on my budget!" and they come back with "well it is like buying a ferrari with a moped engine"
  • So I finally give in and i look into getting an i5 2500k from amazon for £153 (trustable site right?) and also try to put down the budget as MUCH as i can on accesories included dvd drive and cases and harddrives etc.
  • So here is my potential basket:

Antec 300 (maybe try to find a cheaper easier to use case)
    8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Jet Black
    20m ethernet cable
120mm Akasa AK-174BK-S Black Case Fan, x2 (maybe only get one)
Corsair Enthusiast TX V2 600w (i am already a fan boy but i guess i need to make changes and get a cheaper PSU so i can afford an i5)
Intel Core i5 2500K (unlocked) if possible
    500GB Seagate (wanted 1tb but oh well sad-smiley-002.gif )
    MSI Z77A-G43 Ivybridge Ready Motherboard
    2GB Asus Radeon HD 7850
  • So should i go for the i5 to avoid bottlenecking issues especially on CPU heavy games like BF3 multiplayer and skyrim but as a side effect go through all the trouble of cutting ties with my corsair fan boyism and shopping around painfully to find cheaper parts
  • ...or should i just stick with the i3 2120? wink.gif
  • Thank you for reading!

Yeah, you should try to get the i5 for gaming. You'll really kick yourself down the road if you don't. There are a few areas where you could do some budget cuts. As you mentioned, you could get a cheaper PSU which should save you some cash. That being said, you really don't want to completely cheap out on the PSU as it's important to get one from a reliable company, because if you get a crappy one it could destroy your system in a worst cast scenario. I really wouldn't cheap out much more on the case either. Cheap case are just so gross to work with rolleyes.gif

Take i5 2500k, don't worry about your HDD, you should try Intel SRT later, you'll see lots of improvement.

The i3 2120 will be plenty for BF3 and Skyrim, see this thread http://www.overclock.net/t/1254896/i3-2120-bf3-multiplayer/0_100

can you tell mei f the novatech 600 or 650w is any good?
Never really heard of novatech but if it has what it claims to have in it's PSU's on this site http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/powersupplies/nov-psg600.html then yes it is a solid choice.

i3 is plenty for HD7850. I used it before getting my i5-3570K for overclocking purpose.

Alternatively you can get i5-2400.

i just quickly researched amazon ebay and scan and the total of this list:

Antec 300
8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Jet Black
Corsair Enthusiast TX V2 600w
Intel Core  i5 2500K
500GB Seagate
MSI Z77A-G43 Ivybridge Ready Motherboard
2GB Asus Radeon HD 7850

CAME TO 580!! this is the best case senario, mind you, but still, makes me incredibly happy that i got a tx650, i5 AND 7850 under 600! I hope when i build the comp a month from now, prices wil drop atleast slightly!

but then again.. there is still the matter of case fans, etc
post #10 of 103
I would recommend the 6950 route actually and save a few bucks..? There in the same class as far as performance, just the 7 series use less power.

Actually the 6950 looks faster in bf3

328

AND its cheaper. Just a little more power, nothing crazy. Any decent 500w unit will suffice.

I would also opt for the cheaper i3 variant...the difference is negligible in my opinion. You'll save almost $100 going these two routes, with almost no difference in performance.
