Need to upgrade Folding Rig --Bulldozer or Phenom II x6? (update) - Page 2

post #11 of 56
Folding is all floating point and the Phenom II X6 is faster for folding because it has 6 floating point units (FPU) while FX-81x0 has only 4. Remember that Bulldozer has two fixed point units and only one floating point unit per module and 4 modules in total.

So go with the the X6.

I know no one tells the future here but if I know how much BD's launch price was maybe I will be close on a goal. Man, that is a long time to wait for an upgrade. LOL.

8150 started at $270 from Amazon I believe.

This could change everything for me LOL. This info is of importance, I didn't realize the floating points thing though I have heard of it. I am getting so confused, Heheh. I think tomorrow I will give my local mom&pop shop a call and see if it is even possible for them to order a Phenom II x6 for me and what the estimate would be. This might cost me in the long run but I might start with the PIIx6, test it, run it, oc it and overall see how I like it and keep an eye on the pile driver, follow the reviews and then make the decision whether to upgrade. You all have good points. I am surprised with how many responses I got on this and it is giving me a chance to look at all the angles.

If you can't find it at the store, you can get a 960T and try to unlock the 2 extra cores on it : http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Phenom-Processor-Edition-Socket/dp/B0056D5AMY

Or buy a define 6-core but slower and on Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106012

Folding wise the Fx 8150 does use a little more power than the intel range. My FX 8150@ stock was drawing about 70 watts more than the i7 2600's while folding and bringing in between 15k-18k under Linux (i7 2600@ 4.4Ghz brings in approx 30k
). Now the Fx 8150 does sound poor when compared to the i7 but if you compare the power/points to what some gpu cards are bringing in it's not as bad as it first looks.

Folding at home on AMD cpu's is like pissing up a rope, the code won't use the cpu correctly.

doh.gif That was last updated 4 and a half years ago! It has changed since then, as the X6 does fine today.

I can do bigadv on my 1055t overclocked to 4GHz pretty easily. It's great for folding.

I vote for x6 phenom.. higher IPC ..AMD kinda really sucked with those FX's
Usually newer technology is better

The FX processors are actually quite a bit faster with some things and are only a little slower on others. For folding I vote x6 but apart from that the FX processors win in most multithreaded applications.

@OP

You also need to consider that in the future AMD plans to remove FPUs from the CPU and let GPU does floating point operations instead. What this means to you for AMD platform is that future AMD platform will depend on GPU folding solely. We already know that GPU folds quite less (especially Radeon) than CPU.

Therefore my recommendation is that grab Phenom II X6 now, then switch to Intel platform for you next major upgrade, when the time comes.
