Wrong, its still written in Fortran and still built with the Intel Compiler, and the Intel Compiler still cripples smid instructions on non intel chips.

Absolutely nothing has changed at all.

Actually a lot has changed since then. Intel compiler now gives AMD processor SSE2 support while lockes out SSE3+ and AVX support on AMD/VIA processors.

Thing is, AMD prohibits the use of its compiler (QMD) on Intel CPU.
Quote:
AMD has a functionally comparable math library to link with the QMD core, but the speed is not as good as Intel counterpart. And more importantly, the AMD EULA prohibits it from running on Intel CPUs, so it's not a viable solution either.

Here is an update on my situation, I did some research on what AMD cpu's are available at my local stores and (I think you all knew this already) but no one sells the 1100t or 1090t that I was looking for. Now they have the 1045t but I am not sure that would be much of an improvement. Here is my next question: They also have the 960t's. I understand that the cores are unlockable and I think I have a good mb for that. Would it be worth it to choose between the 1045t and 960t? Or will both of these be weak for folding and overclocking? I saw the 1100t on amazon.com but unfortunately my situation only allows me to pay in cash and I wouldn't qualify to order it online. With these AMD choice is Thubans still the way to go?

I think tomorrow I will give my local mom&pop shop a call and see if it is even possible for them to order a Phenom II x6 for me and what the estimate would be. This might cost me in the long run but I might start with the PIIx6, test it, run it, oc it and overall see how I like it and keep an eye on the pile driver, follow the reviews and then make the decision whether to upgrade. You all have good points. I am surprised with how many responses I got on this and it is giving me a chance to look at all the angles.

If you can't find it at the store, you can get a 960T and try to unlock the 2 extra cores on it : http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Phenom-Processor-Edition-Socket/dp/B0056D5AMY

Or buy a define 6-core but slower and on Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106012

Sorry I didn't give credit where credit was due. I knew someone mentioned the 960T and the 1045t but just wasn't sure where I heard it from. I started in the Phenom II world with a 710 and heard about unlocking the cores but wasn't successful unlocking mine. Probably the board or the chip since the multiplyer was locked. Finally out grew the 710 and got a 965 which was cool when I got it until a couple weeks later the x6 cores were released. I was dissappointed that the 965 didn't have extra cores. I am skeptical and I know that it is only chance finding a 960t that unlocked but if I find one that is I don't know how much oc'ing and performance I would lose. This is what I found:

Phenom II x4 960t @ fry's for $124.90

or

Phenom II x6 1045t @ a mom&pop shop for $185

This is of course if these Thubans are the AMD way to go or not. I am also looking into a university surplus auction but not sure when I can get up there or what they have to offer yet.

You should try to get the 960T from the ma and pa store becuase if it does not unlock, they might give you a new one to try again. Just my two cents.

New information!!!
NCIX has the 1100T on backorder(2-5 days) for $190, but you can order it now and they will send it to you when they get it.

I will call the m&p store tomorrow on the 960t but they order all their components from 1 vendor I found out so if the 960t is not unlockable they would have to reorder it. I would not be able to exchange it right away. If they allowed an exchange. I am thinking a 960t would be anything from a rebranded 1075t to a rebranded 1100t. I make that assumption since the frequency starts at 3000MHz. Am I right from my conclusion? if so and the cores unlock I would be about in the position I want to be since I am looking at 1090t to 1100t. And if unlockable to 6 cores would it be reasonable for me to oc all cores to atleast 4GHz?
