and that should mean higher performance in single-thread tasks than the phenom? so far looks like the FX is the better choice. the only thing I am concerned about is heat, is that an issue for either when overclocking? i have not researched much about either platform so my knowledge is not too great about it.

the fx is cooler at the same clock then the phenom. with a 400mhz higher clock, the fx will be faster. and cooler. the thing with the fx is, as others have said, its power hungry.

You could get a used 1045t in the forums for $95 shipped if you're interested. Here is someone selling one in the OCN marketplace.

This defies logic, as power usage = heat. No like or similar about it, it IS heat.

With the same HSF my old FX-4100 @ 4.6Ghz was about the same as my Phenom 9950 @ 3.2Ghz. Temps were similar, performance was similar (9950 was actually faster by a small amount most of the time), and worst of all power usage was similar (9950 is a 140w cpu at stock 2.6Ghz.).

Fx-4100 to FX-8150 for gaming is not so different in many instances. Almost never a doubling of performance, maybe an additional 30-50%.

In new FMA optimized code FX is hands down better. In generally unoptimized code (read as everything current for the most part) the Phenom II X6 is better. FX may also eclipse the X6 in certain highly threaded workloads. In general gaming its pretty much a wash as far as Im concerned. Get whatever is cheaper or easier to obtain for you.
