Best wireless for gaming desktop?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I'm extremely short on knowledge for wireless solutions for desktops, but I will be needing it for this next one.

I will be gaming and my connection already has a 60-70ms ping, so it would be best for as little ping as possible. My router supports N and 5GHz as well.

Right now I'm leaning towards:

All help is welcome, if you guys need more info I'll be more than willing to try to help too.

Thanks!
Big Al

Edit:
Thoughts on this D-link? It supports dual band

What wireless NIC do you have now? What router do you have? Do you have a lot of other 2.4ghz networks close by that cause interference?

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'm doing the build this week, so I don't have anything yet. I've read the USB ones aren't the best for gaming though.

I have absolutely no 2.4 networks around. I have to go a ways out to even pick up another.

As for the router, I don't know exactly. I'm out of town. It's a linksys wrt54 series I think it's the GL but I'm not sure. It's running ddwrt as well. In two months I will be switching to a E4200 too.

Would this be even a better choice?

I picked this up and have not had any issues when it comes to gaming online. I've used it with MMOs and BFBC2 without any issues.

Same make and brand so that's good to hear. Only thing is it doesn't have 5 GHz support, is that a big deal?

Honestly I posted a thread and somebody recommended that one to me and it works great for me. Not really sure when it comes to the 5 GHz. I guess for me it can't be much of a big deal if I haven't even run into any issues with it.

Hi, thanks for the rep, but you probably wont like my suggestion. lol

In my opinion, speaking strictly about gaming:

Gaming just needs low ping times not high bandwidth. Since you have nothing to create interference, you can pick up just about any equipment that will give you the range you need. Preferably internal like you are looking for. USB will probably add a bit of latency but it will be so small its withing the margin of error.

If you have money to burn and want the best, then by all means get a 5ghz router and adapter. However, Its not necessary unless you have 2.4ghz interference or want to try and squeeze a bit more throughput out of your connection. (useless for gaming)

For reference these are my experiences, of which I have spent tons of money over the years.

For gaming: I used to live with my brother. The router, a WRT610n, was in my room and wired via gigabit to my computer with a PCI version of an intel GT NIC (also tried the onboard realtek with same results) My brother was in another room with an older wireless G Netgear adapter (internal PCI) We used to play CS:S on the same server over the same internet connection. It drove me nuts because he would ALWAYS have a ~5ms ping advantage. I couldnt figure it out because I was hardwired and he was only on wireless G. And my computer was about twice as fast in every department.

As far as technologies go:
5ghz: With last gen hardware it was complete crap. Worked great in the same room, but as soon as you left it would be very unreliable.

2.4ghz: Overall works great if there is not a lot of other routers in the area. My new apartment has lots of routers in the area and it was giving me trouble, so:

I tried Powerline networking. <--- The best thing I ever did as far as networking goes. I can constantly get 10+MB/s transfer between computers. I cant comment about ping comparisons as It would not be fair to compare it to wireless in my location. Ill see if I can get a gigabit vs powerline comparison but dont hold your breath.
