Asus 670 DirectCU II TOP - Page 133

Hello everyone, my first post here.

I have a problem with my GTX 670 TOP from ASUS. I bought it about 3 weeks ago. The first one I got was pretty good. I was getting very nice benchmark scores (about P34.000 in Vantage and P9400 in 3DMark11 - coupled with i7-2700K @ 4.0), however I was also getting black screens in Heaven Benchmark 3.0 and both Crysis games. The rest of the games and benchmarks were fine but I returned the card to the shop.

Yesterday I got a new GTX 670 TOP from the shop. At first it seemed fine. I ran Heaven at settings that would immediately crash my first card for about 45 min. and it worked fine. The card was stable at 1241 MHz (the default overclock) and 73C. Then I ran 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark11 and the scores were much lower then before: P29.500 in Vantage and P8700 in 3DMark11. That's about 15% lower scores then my first card!

The worse thing is that when I was playing Diablo 3, after few hours, I started getting black screens -> recovery -> poor FPS. Alt + Tab fixes the FPS. When I have that low FPS the core clock is stuck at 1241 MHz and memory clock at 300 MHz (instead of default 3005 MHz).

I need some advice. :/ Maybe someone could explain why this card is almost 15% slower then my first one? The clocks seem to be the same, the old one was also running at about 1200 MHz and sometimes dropping to 1137 MHz. This one is rock solid at 1241 MHz - never drops below while playing Crysis 2.

What should I do? Should I also try to return this one?

Best regards,
Dragonix

Dragonix, can you please post links to your 3dMark11 scores, one each with the old card and new card so we can look at what's changed?

Is there any chance your CPU is no longer OC'ing properly? Cause both Vantage and 3dMark11 overall scores are strongly affected by CPU clocks.

The Diablo 3 issue concerns me, but it seems like there's quite a few driver glitches still for that game, might just be that in this case. What happens if you let Heaven run for an hour or so? Does it remain stable/not crash the driver or freeze or anything?

Also, can you post your score on Heaven bench, using the settings I specified here?

http://www.overclock.net/t/1258815/rock-heaven-your-hardest-670-680-users/0_50

Lets see if your scores look normal on a pure GPU benchmark like Heaven.

3DMark11 old card: sample 1 , sample 2
3DMark11 new card: sample 1 , sample 2

Heaven Benchmark:

479

Card was running at 1254 MHz in the beggining, then dropped to 1241 MHz after reaching ~69C.

I'm going to test Heaven for at least 1 hour now.

set power target to max and set up custom fan profile so it doesn't reach 70C. after doing so downclocking should be gone.

Also a little tip. In the nvidia control panel, there's a power managment tab. It has 2 options, adaptive or maximum performance. Set to maximum performance and ur voltage will stay strong alol day smile.gif

This is interesting to know. I didnt know there was a power setting in the nvidia panel. When gaming my voltage pretty much stays at 1.175v anyway using AB but always best to set both values to make sure it doesnt dip and cause a crash. Does this mean it will stay at 1.175v idle though say on the desktop? If so it might cause higher idle temps and more stress on the hardware? REP for you kind sir! thumb.gif

It ran fine for about 2 hours with max. temp 74C, stable at 1241 MHz. It eventually did crash with error D3D11appWindow::swap_window(): device removed between 2nd and 4th hour of the test. So I guess this one is a bit faulty as well. :/

I tried that. It bumps 3DMark11 score to P8800 but still far from P9400 I was getting with the previous card.

BIG UPDATE:

Mystery solved! It was running in PCI-E x4 mode instead of x16. I cleaned the connector, replugged it and the performance is back to normal! smile.gifNew 3DMark11 score.. Well, back to stability testing ...

Glad you got it sorted Dragon.

I would also point out that your Heaven screen above shows your voltage only running at 1.150V, but these cards are capable of 1.175V. This isn't indicative of a problem w/your card, as mine does the same thing in terms of not going to 1.175V on it's own (mine does 1.162V on load). It's actually kind of a good thing, because it means your card has voltage headroom for additional OC'ing.

So ... assuming that fixing your PCI-Ex speed didn't rectify this issue, one way I know to 'fix' this to is go into precisionX, hit the 'Adjust Voltage' button, and then slam your voltage to the top on the slider (1.175V). This should cause your card to run at that voltage when you put it under load, which will in turn give you more headroom for OC'ing ... for my card going from 1.162V to 1.175V allows me to OC an additional 30MHz. You will probably be able to get even more.

Note, however, that voltage adjustments are NOT SAVED in a saved PrecisionX profile (which is lame), so you have to manually make that adjustment each time if you want to run clocks that are only stable at 1.175V.
