Asus 670 DirectCU II TOP - Page 188

I know the "kepler boost" is unique depending on the card, but what I was trying to say was that the boost professed by Asus and labeled on the box as 1137mhz could be, and rightly so should be assumed to be the kepler boost. In my mind, I would have thought that Asus (or any other company that set up their oc with a listed "boost clock") would have mastered the new product they were pushing out right? What else would they be referring to besides "KB" when labeling 1137mhz? So is it true that Asus in this case, this specific card, calculated a boost the card would do, but didn't calculate that there would be a further boost than what they had intended?
I appreciate you clarifying this of me btw. But my main message to the op of the question listed 1-2 pages back was that the non-top, when value was concerned, was just as good as the top imho. Why not save the extra bucks when one has the possibility of oc'ing the card to values achievable by the top? From my exp., the TOP's claims of better binning and etc. has failed to produce a card that does a lot more than it's non-top brother.

What I/we call the 'Kepler Boost' here on OCN is the difference in clock value between the listed 'Boost Clock' (1137 MHz in this case) and the actual, observed clock on 3d load, which can vary in amount depending on the individual card sample. From what we've seen, KB can be anywhere between 0 and 234MHz on top of the listed/stock Boost Clock value. It is (other than instances of downclocking due to temps or power consumption) a 'fixed' value specific to the particular card sample.

Perhaps it would simplify things if I said that what is called 'Boost Clock' on Kepler ... is the functional equivalent to the cards 'Core Clock', if you were to compare to generations past, and what they call the Base Clock is really meaningless except that it's a lower 'step' that's available in the power-saving cycle.

So Asus called the card a 1137MHz card because it's been overclocked by 157MHz over the 'reference' model, which has a Boost Clock of 980MHz. All the brands label their cards 'clock', via this same methodology, and like I say it's easier to understand it if you simply view what they call the 'Boost Clock' ... as really just the base clock of the card. It's a pretty bad misnomer and the source of TONS of confusion on the boards over the past few months.

I presume the way the KB is determined is via certain intrinsic qualities of the chip, defined and coded into the chip at the factory. My best guess is that it's a simple multiplier between 0 and 18 (since the KB clock is always a multiple of 13 and 234 is the highest-yet-reported KB on the boards), and this value determines the KB in the end (13 x the factory multiplier). Note that however it works, ALL the Kepler chips work like this, not just Asus chips.

So the problem that Asus ran into is that they OC'd the card by 157MHz to 1137MHz, but some of the chips were coming from the factory with high KB multipliers, and the 1137 + KB values (what we've come to call the 'Max Boost', aka Stock Boost + KB) pushed their core clocks into the realm of instability.

The new bios they put out appears to trim the multiplier by 4 (i.e. apparently they made a custom BIOS that can adjust the factory multiplier) which is why cards with the new bios still say they are 1137MHz Boost Clock, but they all now run an exactly 54MHz slower 'Max Boost' .. which got them (all?) stable ... without the PR nightmare of actually reducing the 'visible' GPU Boost value of 1137.

Now running my NON TOP at PCI-E 3.0 after getting hold of an Ivy Bridge smile.gif Get about 5FPS more in most games which is probably a few FPS because of the chip and a few for PCI-E 3.0...not bad for a free upgrade thumb.gif

Hey DC2 NON TOP members,

I think I may have the crappiest of all DC2 non TOP cards. Don't have any screen shot, but believe me, its crappy

Out of box, 1045mhz under load. +100 is the highest I can get it. Effective total OC = 1145

This is WITH KEPLER BOOST. 1145mhz is the final total number, under load, with kepler boost, with my added +100.

What are you NON TOP members getting? I could have sworn the past 10 pages or so, most non top members are AT LEAST breaking 1200, and most report closer to 1300 or above. I do remember reading one user getting a dud NON TOP....I believe his was 1190mhz?

I am sorry to hear that, you are really unlucky. My card is rocking 1337MHz with +200 on Afterburner.

i hope i don't go too off topic with this question but i got the 670 directcu ii regular non top version and was wondering if overclocking voids the 3 yr warranty?

No, not really unless you do some irregular overclocking by playing with hardware. Software overclocking should be fine, and even remember Asus has a CD coming together with card which is a overclocking software redface.gif

A friend of mine on here got a similar clocking non top. My max game clock is 1260. Not crazy but I'm happy with it.

1145 low? or somewhere in the low 1200s?

After keeping up with the 670 news, I noticed "most" will hit 1200 or up....yes it gets more rare for those hitting 1300 and up, but generally speaking I see alot of 1200 and up....I only see VERY few hit below 1200, and if they did, its still in the upper range of 1100's (1190 for example)

Hey guys I just posted a bit info in the overclocking thread and flashed the non TOP to a TOP card. This is only usefull for you guys who dont like to use afterburner and such silly tools to get TOP speeds. Ohh yeah make sure your card can handle speeds like that before you do it.
