Going SLI, have questions.

Hey everyone,

I am going to be going SLI in the very near future. And I have a couple questions before I do so.

I know I need a 7900gt to match up with mine. but what does it need to be?

1)Model number?
2)edition? ie. KO, CO, Superclock..etc
3)Make?

Also, I use the sli bridge that came with my mobo right?

oh and my sli pci-e slots are x8, while my single is 16x how does that affect performance?

i'm pretty sure the 8x vs 16x thing is standard when you switch to SLI
also i know fur sure it has to be the same chip, and same edition. i would think that to keep things simple you should just get the same make and model if you can... the eVGA's are always nice cards... and shouldn't be hard to find... is there a reason you don't want another identical card?

there are a few sli motherboard that can run both slots in 16x at the same time, but there is almost no performance difference.

Nah, they can even be a different brand. I think that SLi just defaults to the speed of the slowest card.

Well I wanted to get this card. But my card the model number is 256-P2-N565-AX. So I have to get another one of the same model number?? I though it just had to be another 7900gt, and it didn't matter the brand, or edition.

it has to be an evga, but not the same edition, keep in mind though that if u go with a KO, it will be clocked the same as the other card, or u can hust OC the one u have to match the KO

Why would you spend $300+ on a vid card now when dx10 will be out in a month or two?

This is just not true. Mixed vendor support was added in SLI drivers a LONG time ago. Basically the similarities between the two cards you use must be this. They must have the same core, that means 7900 cant work with 7800, 7900gs cant work with 7900gt, 7900gt cant work with 7900gtx. Also, they must have the same amount of memory, and the same memory interface. This means no GTO with a GT. Also, you dont need to worry about the part numbers. The only difference between the SC, the KO, and the normal GT are clock speeds, and they type of hsf used, other then that its all the same hardware. And yes, you use the SLI bridge that came with your mobo. Ill be going sli soon myself.

Because its more like 3-4 months, and why wait to pay 400-500$ for a card than, when 2 7900gts will get the job done the same, and the games will still be played on dx9 all the way trough 2007. Why do you ask such questions?
