Just bought a $600 paper weight

Thread Starter
Setup:

AMD Phenom II X4 965
ASRock 970 Extreme3
Barracuda 500GB
Corsair 2x2GB 1333
OCZ 600w Modular
9400GT
Thermaltake V3 Black Edition
Asus CD Drive
Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit

Windows wouldn't install past "Expanding files" withought getting a blue screen. Then instead, it was getting corrupted file errors.

We tried XP, formatted the HDD fine (means it's good) and installed and worked fine.

Tried 7 again, no bacon.

Tried installing 7 in the same HDD in a different PC, worked fine. Put the HDD in my PC, wouldn't start windows. Tried repairing it and everything, nothing.

It just won't work. If you could tell me anything please do. I feel sick knowing I bought a $600 paper weight.

Try lowering the RAM timings, or try different ram. I had this exact issue, and the problem was the RAM timings were too tight. Lowered them, and it worked fine.

Asrock boards can be finicky with ram. Have you tried different ram?

Is your CD drive the Asus DRW-24B1ST? It likely is, its the cheapest SATA DVD drive on the planet. There have been lots of people (myself included) that have a heck of a time using it to install windows 7. I would highly suggest you use that XP install and make a windows 7 USB stick, that is what I had to do to work around mine. You can get the ISO right off the microsoft site for the windows install.

Or you can try swapping odd's. Swapping a hard drive with 7 into a computer only works with some copies of Windows, and if it were a system builder install it doesn't always work right. Try using a different DVD drive.
