[MacRumors] Retina Displays Also Coming to Next-Generation iMac?

As part of ABC News' roundup of the latest MacBook Pro rumors, Joanna Stern claims that not only the MacBook Pro family but also the iMac line is set to gain ultra high-resolution "Retina" displays.

The laptop will see the introduction of the “Mac Retina Display,” which is said to have a very high resolution. ABC News has similarly heard from its own sources that both the next MacBook Pro and the iMac would be getting very, very high resolution displays. Apple refreshed its new iPad with a Retina Display in March.

The 21.5-inch iMac would see a pixel count in the range of the 17-inch MacBook Pro as its 1920x1080 resolution would be bumped to 3840x2160, but the 27-inch iMac would move from its current resolution of 2560x1440 to a monster Retina display at 5120x2880. The same panel could also be used in a revised Apple Thunderbolt Display should hardware be able to support the resolution.

I'll have a hard time waiting to buy this if the high end 27 inch model has a 5120x2880 resolution... Tough job for a 7970M to handle that resolution though tongue.gif

Any GPU should be fine as there are no 3D elements.

Yeah, but I'm thinking of gaming specifically. The 7970M is a 7870 is a GTX 580 so 30 FPS on high at most titles at 1440p should be possible, but at 2880p eek.gif

Who games on a Mac anyway?

Gaming is for PCs.

If this were true I'd hope that who ever makes the monitors themselves would be selling them to other manufacturers too.

If not I wonder how long it'd be until someone on OCN either hooks the entire thing into their desktop or they strip the monitor out of the computer. It'd be hilarious watching even the people with the 3x 7970s and 680s struggle to get acceptable frames on this monitor with higher settings.

Apple will likely sell the 27 inch display with that same resolution too... they may be the first company to sell them eek.gif
