There will probably be new algorithms in place to make the workloads easier on 2D applications in the future. They probably might also design a part of the chip for high res 2D acceleration only - must similar to the old days when 3D acceleration was implemented or dedicated tessellation units today. You always seem to think number crunching is the only thing that goes into these things.

Good thing this is going on a desktop, retina displays have little to no place for tablets/mobile as the battery drainage is just impractical. Likewise, there is still little practicality to desktops as your viewing space does not increase. At a comfortable distance, most decent resolution displays, given AA, make it difficult already to see individual pixels. It is also much easier to use AA then attempting to draw millions of more pixels. I highly dislike how this tech is only a marketing ploy as opposed to moving computer technology into a practical direction. It is like 42 megapixel cameras when you are only using the photo to show people on facebook.

Though, this technology does help ultra large displays though (but still don't need such high densities - so in reality, it doesn't help there either). These resolutions should be on 70in + displays, not a 27in crappy overpriced panel to begin with.

And in typical OCN fashion, Apple is bashed for a rumour that they'll be the first to release really awesome.

Stop just jumping to a popular schema and actually read the posts. There isn't really a practical application to a high res 27in display when you gain NO more real estate, let alone, all you do is allow the user to sit a couple inches from the screen and get the same picture quality as if there were from a comfortable 2-3 feet from the display. For what? A much higher price, initial lower quality displays (have you seen how washed out the iPad 3 is?), more power draw, etc.

That's correct but the current generation iMac's have IPS panels and it's possible Apple will shift the MacBook line to IPS panels too.

I wasn't talking about general work loads. And I wasn't talking about number crunching either, I'm talking about The Witcher 2 xD

They'll be on Apple's laptops too and apparently Apple has dealt with the battery problem. We're just used to having ~100 PPI on displays, as soon as we start using higher PPI displays and then look back it'll all just look blurry. (There's an iPad 3 and 2 in my home, and seriously the latter looks blurry.)

There will be a very substantial and noticeable improvement in sharpness on any of these 'retina' displays over a standard display else the entire industry wouldn't be bothering with it and nor would Apple either. There's still a benefit to it even if you can't see an individual pixel -- aliasing just improves substantially.

The price should be the same, and what's this about the iPad 3? Every review of the iPad 3 has had the reviewer praising it for its colour quality over all other slates, and I even own one now -- it looks fantastic.

Funnily enough though, if you boot Windows 7 on this new iMac it's going to have a work space of 5120x2880 rather than 2560x1440 (Hi-DPI). The task bar is going to be the thickness of a paper clip lol.

I think the biggest advantage to a screen such as this is "resolution independence" becoming a reality. I for one as a developer welcome this idea finally coming to fruition. My question in regards to the GPU is how is even a 600 series Nvidia GPU going to handle 5120x2880 as even the current monster GTX 690 has a maximum digital display size of 2560x1600. Will a single retina display be seen by the GPU as multiple monitors? thinking.gif

I may not always agree with Apple's business practices but no one can deny that they are as good as it gets in the PC industry in terms of industrial design, I have been a fan of Johnny Ive's work for well over a decade. I even put my PC into one of his earlier case designs.

If you'd like I could post a dozen of graphs supporting my point as I previously did.

Secondly, as Steelbom said, the difference between a non-Retina display and a "retina" one is absolutely visible. So even if the scaling does not change, the images, text and etc, will appear much sharper. Not to mention the fact that OS X will probably come with an option to choose between the normal mode and the HiDPI mode.
